Oh, you talkin’ about candy from the 1950s? Now that’s some real memories right there! Back in them days, candy wasn’t all fancy or nothin’—just good, sweet stuff that hit the spot for young ‘uns and grown-ups too. Let me tell ya about some of them goodies folks used to gobble up back in them times.

Peeps

Oh, these lil’ marshmallow chicks, they started poppin’ up around 1953. Ain’t nothin’ like Peeps—soft, squishy, and sweet, them chicks brought joy to Easter and all year round too. Folks couldn’t get enough of that marshmallowy goodness. Just a simple lil’ candy, but boy, it was somethin’ special back then, and still is today if ya ask me!

M&M’s Peanut

Now, you ever heard of them peanut M&M’s? They came around in 1954, and let me tell ya, folks went wild for ’em! They got that milk chocolate on the outside, a crispy candy shell, and right in the middle, there’s a whole peanut. The best part? They didn’t melt in yer hand, which made ’em just perfect to munch on anytime. Kids and adults alike got hooked on these colorful treats.

These were somethin’ else, I tell ya! Pixy Stix were little straws filled with powdered candy. They came around in 1952, and folks couldn’t get enough of that sugary powder. You just tore one open and downed the powder—it was tangy, sweet, and oh-so-good. You’d see kids running around with colored lips from them Pixy Stix—messy but worth every bit of it!

Saltwater Taffy

Now, taffy was somethin’ folks liked too. Vanilla and chocolate flavors were some of the popular ones back then, and it was chewy as all get-out! Didn’t matter if ya were by the sea or not, this saltwater taffy was a treat for folks all around. It was somethin’ ya chewed on for a good while, makin’ it last longer than a lot of other candies. A real classic!

Dolly Mixtures and More

Now Dolly Mixtures, Pear Drops, Toffees, and those kinds—they were big back then too. These were the kinds of candies ya’d find in little shops, all packed in jars. Dolly Mixtures were these little colorful bits with a chewy, soft texture—real easy to share with friends or nibble on through the day. Pear Drops had a tangy-sweet flavor that folks just loved.

Fruit Salads were another favorite. They came in little colorful wrappers, and each piece was a burst of fruity sweetness. Kids would stuff a handful in their pockets and chew on ’em for hours. Sweet and tasty, and made with all sorts of fruity flavors—real simple, but they sure were somethin’ special!

Catherine Wheels

Now here’s a unique one—Catherine Wheels! These were big ol’ rolls of licorice with a lil’ sweet center. It was fun to eat and lasted long too, which was nice for folks who wanted to stretch their candy out. You’d unroll it bit by bit, savorin’ each piece.
