Okay, so I was digging through my grandma’s old recipe box the other day, right? And I found all these crazy dessert recipes from the 1950s. I mean, we’re talking some wild stuff here. But it got me curious, so I decided to try a few out. Let me tell you, it was a trip back in time!

First, I gathered all the ingredients. A lot of these recipes call for things like shortening and gelatin, which I don’t usually keep in my pantry. So, a quick trip to the grocery store was in order. I even found some vintage-looking sprinkles to really get into the spirit.

1950s Desserts: Easy Recipes (Try These Retro Sweets at Home)

I started with something called a “Coconut Chiffon Cake.” The recipe said it was all the rage in 1956. Mixing the batter was a bit of a workout, lots of whisking by hand, no fancy stand mixer for me! But I must say, it made me respect the process and put a lot of love into it. The smell of coconut and ginger filled my kitchen while it baked.

  • Step 1: I separated the eggs, which is always a bit tricky.
  • Step 2: I whisked the egg whites until they were super fluffy.
  • Step 3: I carefully folded them into the rest of the batter.

While the cake was baking, I moved on to the frosting. Now, this wasn’t your typical buttercream. This was a cooked frosting, made on the stovetop. I felt like a real 1950s housewife, stirring that pot and watching it thicken. It was kinda cool, to be honest. I put my own twist on it and added some food coloring to make it stand out.

Then, I tried to make some divinity candy. That stuff is seriously tricky! It’s all about getting the sugar syrup to the exact right temperature. I definitely messed up the first batch, but I didn’t give up. And you know what? The second batch came out pretty good! Chewy and sweet, just like the recipe promised.

Things Got a Little Weird

Next, I tackled a “Cranberry-Eggnog Gelatin Salad.” Yes, you read that right, a salad made with gelatin. Now, I’m not usually a fan of jiggly desserts, but I had to try it. Prepping this was an experience. I dissolved the gelatin, mixed it with eggnog and cranberries, and poured it into this crazy mold I found at a thrift store. After it set, I unmolded it, and there it was, in all its retro glory. Honestly, I wasn’t crazy about the taste, but it was a fun experiment, and it looked wild on the table. It was definitely a unique experience to try it, but I am not sure if I would ever make it again.

I also whipped up some classic cookies – sugar, chocolate chip, you name it. These were more my speed. Simple, comforting, and delicious. And of course, no 1950s dessert spread would be complete without ice cream. I churned some homemade vanilla in my ice cream maker, and it was the perfect ending to my retro baking adventure.

All in all, it was a blast trying out these old-school desserts. Some were definitely better than others, but it was fun to see what people were eating back in the day. And hey, I learned a few new techniques, even if I’m not sure I’ll be making gelatin salad again anytime soon. If you’re looking for a fun and quirky baking project, I definitely recommend giving some 1950s desserts a try! You might be surprised by what you discover. And it is also fun to look back on the old days and taste the flavors of the past. Just be prepared for a few kitchen mishaps along the way – it’s all part of the fun!
