Oh boy, where do I even begin with these “blue and gold desserts”? I saw this trend popping up all over my Pinterest, and you know me, I had to give it a shot. Figured it would be a fun weekend project, and honestly, it was… eventually.
The Hunt for Supplies
First things first, I needed to get my hands on the right ingredients. I thought, “Blue and gold, how hard can that be?” Famous last words, my friends.
- The Blue: Initially, I grabbed some regular blue food coloring. Big mistake. It turned everything a weird, sad turquoise. I ended up going back to the store and getting this “electric blue” gel coloring. Much better!
- The Gold: This was a whole other adventure. Edible gold leaf? Gold sprinkles? Gold luster dust? I felt like I was in a treasure hunt. I ended up with some gold shimmer powder that looked promising.
Baking Begins (and Ends…and Begins Again)
I decided to start simple with some vanilla cupcakes. Easy peasy, right? Well, the first batch… let’s just say they didn’t rise. At all. Flat as pancakes. I may or may not have forgotten the baking powder. Second batch, though? Perfection. Fluffy, golden, ready for their blue and gold makeover.
For some cakes, I put the electric blue coloring into the cake batter before baking.
The Frosting Fiasco
I opted for a classic buttercream frosting. I whipped up a big batch, divided it, and colored one half blue with that electric blue gel. It looked amazing, I’m not gonna lie.
The “Gold” Moment
Now for the fun part! I dusted each cupcake ever so carefully, and then i used small brush to put gold shimmer on each cupcake. It looked royal.
I also baked the cupcakes using the remaining white batter.
The Final Touch (and a Few Mishaps)
Then I colored the remaining butter cream yellow, then put the gold shimmer on * looks great too!
The Verdict
After all the trials and tribulations, were these blue and gold desserts worth it? Absolutely! They looked stunning, they tasted delicious, and I learned a valuable lesson: always double-check for baking powder. And maybe invest in a good pair of tweezers for applying gold leaf. Would I make them again? Probably. But maybe I’ll stick to just sprinkles next time.
