Okay, so yesterday I had this crazy craving, right? Like, a real, deep-down need for some good German desserts. I’m talkin’ beyond just your average grocery store strudel. I wanted the real deal. So, the first thing I did, like anyone else, was punch “german desserts near me” into Google. Duh.
And bam! A bunch of places popped up. There were a couple of bakeries that looked promising, and this one restaurant that claimed to have authentic German cuisine. I checked out the menus online, and honestly, the pictures alone were enough to get me in the car. I zeroed in on a bakery about 20 minutes away – seemed like the most legit option.

Hopped in the car, cranked up some tunes, and off I went. When I got there, this place was adorable. Small, family-owned kinda vibe, with the smell of cinnamon and sugar hitting you as soon as you walked in. Glass cases full of cakes, pastries, and cookies… it was heaven, I tell ya.
I spent a good five minutes just staring, trying to decide. They had Black Forest Cake (Schwarzwlder Kirschtorte, the real deal!), apple strudel, Bee sting cake (Bienenstich), and tons of other stuff I couldn’t even pronounce. I finally asked the lady behind the counter what she recommended, and she steered me towards the Black Forest Cake and something called a “Berliner“. Apparently, it’s like a German jelly donut.
I grabbed one of each, plus a couple of those little butter cookies that looked too good to resist. Paid up, thanked the lady, and headed back to the car, practically drooling.
Got home, brewed some coffee, and dug in. The Black Forest Cake was insane. Rich chocolate cake, perfectly whipped cream, and these tart cherries that just cut through the sweetness perfectly. It was exactly what I was craving. The Berliner was also super tasty – fluffy dough filled with raspberry jam and dusted with powdered sugar. Messy, but totally worth it.
Honestly, the butter cookies were a bit of an afterthought, but they were surprisingly good too. Just simple, buttery, and crumbly. Perfect with the coffee.
All in all, a successful German dessert adventure. I’m definitely going back to that bakery soon to try more of their stuff. If you’re ever in the mood for something sweet and German, definitely do a “german desserts near me” search and see what pops up. You might be surprised what you find!
