Okay, so today I finally did it. I’ve been meaning to try Ethiopian food for ages, kept hearing about it, you know? So I found this place, looked decent, and just walked in.

Sat down, the vibe was pretty chill. The server came over and handed me the menu. First look, and yeah, lots of names I couldn’t pronounce right off the bat. Kinda exciting, actually. Not your usual burger joint menu, that’s for sure.

Flipping Through the Pages

So, I started really looking it over. The first thing you notice is this bread they talk about everywhere – Injera. They said it’s like a sour, spongy flatbread and you use it to scoop everything up. No forks? Cool, I’m game.

Then you get into the main dishes, these stews called ‘Wot’. Seemed like the heart of the menu. I saw stuff like:

  • Doro Wat: This one sounded popular, a spicy chicken stew.
  • Siga Wat: Beef stew, also sounded like a classic.
  • Misir Wat: Red lentils, spicy. I saw a lot of veggie options, actually.
  • Kik Alicha: Yellow split peas, sounded milder.
  • Lots of other vegetable dishes too, like collard greens (Gomen) and cabbage (Tikil Gomen).

They had lamb options too, like Yebeg Tibs, which seemed like sauteed lamb pieces. Looked really good.

Making the Call

Honestly, everything sounded interesting. How do you pick just one? Then I saw the magic words: Combination Platters. Perfect! They had meat combos and veggie combos. I figured, go big or go home for the first time, right?

I pointed at one of the mixed combination platters, I think it was called Mahberawi or something similar. It had a bit of the Doro Wat, some beef thing, and a couple of the veggie options. Seemed like a good way to sample a few things without committing to a whole plate of something I might not dig.

The server nodded, took the menu, and off I went to wait. Felt pretty good about the choice, like I was gonna get a real taste of what Ethiopian cuisine is all about from that menu exploration. Now, just had to wait for the food itself… which turned out to be a whole other awesome experience!
