Alright, let’s talk about my little adventure trying to recreate something like you’d get at Grand Wok Chinese Cuisine. Not the exact place, you know, but that style of cooking. I’ve always enjoyed eating it, so I figured, why not give it a shot myself?

Getting Started

So, I decided I’d start with something basic. A stir-fry. Can’t go too wrong with that, right? Went down to the market. Picked up some chicken breast, figured that’s easy enough. Then grabbed some veggies.

  • Broccoli florets
  • Bell peppers, red and green
  • Some onion
  • Carrots, sliced thin
  • Garlic and ginger, of course

Got back home, washed everything, and started chopping. This is where the work really begins. Dicing the chicken, slicing the onions, mincing the garlic and ginger. Took a bit of time, gotta get everything prepped before the heat hits the wok.

The Cooking Process

Got my wok out. Haven’t used it in a while, honestly. Cranked up the heat, nice and high. Put in some oil. Waited till it shimmered a bit. First in, the garlic and ginger. Man, that smell fills the kitchen quick. Love that part.

Next, tossed in the chicken. Stirred it around constantly, trying to get it cooked evenly without drying it out. Once it looked mostly done, I scooped it out and set it aside.

Then, the veggies went in. Onions first, then the peppers and carrots. Stirred those around for a few minutes until they were tender-crisp. Added the broccoli last. Added the chicken back in. Poured over my sauce mix – just some soy sauce, a bit of water, touch of sugar, maybe some cornstarch to thicken it up. Kept tossing everything until the sauce coated everything nicely and thickened up.

Funny thing, all this careful prep and step-by-step cooking reminded me of something totally different. Years ago, I tried fixing my old lawnmower. Thought I was Mr. Fix-It. Took the whole engine apart on the garage floor. Had screws and bits everywhere. Looked impressive, I thought.

Spent a whole Saturday trying to put it back together. Had the manual and everything. But you know what? There were like, three bolts left over when I thought I was done. Three bolts! Where did they belong? No idea. Needless to say, that mower never started again. Had to haul the whole mess, bolts and all, to the dump. Ended up just paying a kid down the street to mow the lawn for the rest of the summer.

It taught me something though. Sometimes, you gotta know when to stick to the plan, or just appreciate when someone else does it right. Like this stir-fry. I wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel here. Just following the basic idea, inspired by places like Grand Wok.

Anyway, served the stir-fry over some plain white rice. Looked pretty good, smelled even better. And you know what? It tasted decent! Not restaurant quality, mind you, but a solid home-cooked meal. Quick, relatively easy once the chopping was done. Clean-up wasn’t too bad either. Definitely doing that again sometime.
