Alright, let’s talk about this Horlicks stuff, you know? I ain’t no fancy doctor or nothin’, but I know a thing or two about what folks drink and why. This Horlicks, they say it’s been around for donkey’s years, like 150 years or somethin’. That’s a long time, longer than I’ve been around, that’s for sure!
So, what is it? Well, it’s like a powder, you see? You mix it with milk, warm milk mostly, and it makes a kinda sweet drink. They say it’s good for you, got all sorts of vitamins and protein in it. Vitamins, I don’t know much about it, but it sounds important, right? My old man always said you gotta have your vitamins. And protein, that’s what makes you strong, like them fellas liftin’ hay bales in the field.
Now, way back when, these two brothers, Horlick was their name, they made this stuff for babies and sick folks. That’s what I heard anyways. Then they started sellin’ it to everyone, even old folks and people travelin’ around. Guess it was easier than carryin’ around a whole cow for milk, huh? Later on, they even said you could drink it instead of eatin’ a whole meal. Imagine that! Just drinkin’ your dinner! Sounds like somethin’ my lazy nephew would do, ha!
- What’s in it? Well, I ain’t got the fancy package in front of me, but from what I remember, it’s got wheat stuff and barley stuff, all mixed up. And some kinda milk powder, too. They also put in some calcium, for your bones, they say. My old bones sure could use some of that!
They sell this Horlicks all over the world, even in India. Them soldiers over there, fightin’ in the war, they started drinkin’ it and brought it back home with ’em. Shows you, it must be pretty good stuff if soldiers like it. They need to be strong, them fellas, and if Horlicks helps, well, then it must be doin’ somethin’ right.
I remember seein’ ads for it on the TV a long time ago. And on the radio too. Some fella flyin’ around in the future, drinkin’ Horlicks. Guess they figured if it was good enough for the future folks, it was good enough for us regular people. Smart fellas, them advertisers.
These Horlick brothers, they came from England way back when, and then went to America to start makin’ this stuff. Been makin’ it ever since, I guess. Now some big company makes it, Nestle I think it is. They make all sorts of things, chocolates and coffees and such. Big, big company.
So, is it any good? Well, I reckon it depends on what you like. It’s sweet, kinda malty tastin’. My grandkids, they like it sometimes before bed. Says it helps ’em sleep. Me? I like a cup of tea myself, but I ain’t gonna turn down a cup of Horlicks if someone offers it. Warm milk and somethin’ sweet, that ain’t so bad, especially on a cold night.
They got different kinds too, I heard. Different flavors and such. But the regular one, that’s the one I know. The one that comes in the big jar. You know, the one with the yellow label.
