Alright, alright, let me tell ya ’bout this place, Sura Korean Royal Cuisine Restaurant in Vancouver. I ain’t never seen food like this before, not in my whole life, I tell ya. It’s supposed to be like what them kings and queens ate way back when in Korea. Can you imagine? Kings and queens! Fancy folks, that’s for sure.

They call it “Sura,” this king food. Must be important or somethin’. This restaurant, it’s right smack in the middle of Vancouver, on Robson Street. You know, where all them city slickers hang out. Big buildings, lots of cars, the whole shebang.
First thing you gotta know is, this ain’t your everyday grub. This ain’t no burger and fries joint, no siree. This is fancy-pants eating. Little dishes, all sorts of colors, and flavors you ain’t never tasted before. Some of it spicy, some of it sweet, some of it… well, I ain’t quite sure what it was, but it was interesting, that’s for sure.
I went there with my grandson, you know, the one who works in the city. He’s always tryin’ to get me to try new things. Says I gotta get with the times. Well, I guess this is the times, huh? Fancy Korean food in the middle of Vancouver.
We had this thing called… well, I can’t even pronounce it. Looked like little pancakes, kinda. But they weren’t sweet like pancakes. More savory, you know? And they had all these little bowls of stuff to go with it. Pickled things, spicy things, things I ain’t never seen before in my life. My grandson, he knew what it all was. He’s been eatin’ this kinda stuff for years, I guess. City folk, they know all the fancy places.
And then there was this meat dish. Beef, I think it was. But cooked all fancy-like. Thin slices, all marinated and grilled. It melted in your mouth, I tell ya. Melted right in your mouth. My grandson, he said it was “Galbi” or something like that. Sounded like gibberish to me, but it sure tasted good.

- The food is real different, not like what I’m used to.
- Lots of little dishes, all kinds of flavors.
- The place is clean and fancy, right in the city.
The place itself, it’s real nice. Clean, all shiny and new. The people there, they’re real polite too. Always bowing and smiling. Made me feel a little uncomfortable at first, you know? I’m used to folks just saying “howdy” and gettin’ on with it. But they were nice, I gotta say. Even brought me extra water when I started coughing from that spicy kimchi stuff. Whew, that stuff’s got a kick!
Now, I ain’t gonna lie, this place ain’t cheap. My grandson, he paid the bill, thank goodness. But he said it was worth it. Said it was a special occasion, treatin’ his grandma to a fancy meal. Well, I guess it was special alright. I ain’t never eaten nothin’ like it before. And I probably won’t ever again, unless my grandson takes me back. Which, I ain’t holdin’ my breath for. He’s a busy boy, that one.
But if you’re lookin’ for something different, something fancy, something you ain’t never tried before, then you might wanna check out this Sura place. Just be prepared to open your wallet and your mind. And maybe wear somethin’ a little nicer than your everyday overalls. I sure felt outta place in my Sunday best, let me tell ya.
But the food, it was good. Real good. Different, but good. And that’s all that matters in the end, ain’t it? Good food and good company. Even if that company is your grandson who talks about stocks and bonds and all that other city nonsense I don’t understand a lick of. At least he took me to a place with good food. That’s worth somethin’, I reckon.
So yeah, Sura Korean Royal Cuisine, it’s a thumbs up from this old lady. If you got the money and the adventurous spirit, go give it a try. Just don’t expect no meatloaf and mashed potatoes. You ain’t gonna find that there. You gonna find somethin’ different, somethin’ special. And who knows, you might even like it.

I still don’t understand half of what I ate, but it filled my belly and made my grandson happy. And that, in my book, is a win-win situation.
