Well, howdy there! Let’s talk ’bout some of them sweet things, desserts I reckon you call ’em. Someone was yappin’ ’bout desserts that look like coal, somethin’ called “desserts that has a lot of coal”, sounds mighty strange if you ask me. But hey, if it’s sweet, I ain’t complainin’.
Now, I ain’t no fancy baker, mind you. My desserts ain’t got no fancy names like bettys or buckles or whatever them city folks call ’em. But I can whip up a tasty treat, that’s for sure. We just call it good eatin’ ’round here.

So, this “coal” dessert thing… sounds kinda spooky, don’t it? Like somethin’ you’d find in a haunted house. But folks say it’s tasty, so who am I to judge? I reckon it’s all ’bout makin’ it look like coal, but taste like somethin’ heavenly. Reminds me of that time my grandson tried to make a mud pie, looked awful but tasted…well, like mud with sugar, bless his heart.
- First off, you gotta have somethin’ chocolatey, I figure. Chocolate’s dark and crumbly, just like coal. Maybe a real dark chocolate cake, or those little truffle things folks are makin’ now.
- Then you gotta make it look rough and bumpy. Coal ain’t smooth, no sir. Maybe crush up some cookies or somethin’ and sprinkle it on top. Or use that black cocoa powder, I heard that makes things look mighty dark.
- And don’t forget the sweetness! Sugar, honey, whatever you got. Coal might be black and ugly, but your dessert gotta be sweet and delicious.
I saw this recipe once, for somethin’ called “Christmas Coal Candy”. Said it was easy as pie. Just a few things mixed together, shaped like little lumps, and rolled in that black cocoa powder. Sounded like somethin’ even I could do, and that’s sayin’ somethin’. Kids would probably get a kick outta it, thinkin’ they got a lump of coal for Christmas, then bam! It’s candy!
Then there’s somethin’ called a “Coal Mine Cake.” Now that sounds fancy, but the way I hear it, it’s just a chocolate cake, but decorated all special-like to look like a coal mine. Lots of dark frosting, maybe some crushed cookies on top. Probably tastes real good, even if it looks a little messy.
You know, makin’ desserts ain’t just about followin’ some recipe, it’s about puttin’ your heart into it. Even if you’re makin’ somethin’ that looks like coal, it oughta taste like a little bit of heaven. That’s what I always say. My grandma used to say, “a pinch of love makes everything taste better”, and I reckon she was right.
This “desserts that has a lot of coal” thing got me thinkin’ though. Maybe it ain’t just about the looks. Maybe it’s about finding the sweet in the rough, you know? Like finding a diamond in the rough, or a sweet potato in the dirt. Life’s kinda like that sometimes. Things might look tough, but there’s always somethin’ sweet if you look hard enough.
And speakin’ of sweet, I reckon you could add some cherries or somethin’ red to your coal dessert, make it look like there’s a fire burnin’ in there. That would be pretty, wouldn’t it? Or maybe some nuts, for a little crunch. The possibilities are endless, I tell ya. Just gotta use your imagination and have some fun with it.
So, if you’re lookin’ to make a dessert that has a lot of coal, don’t be scared! It’s just a fun way to make somethin’ different. And remember, even if it looks like coal, it’s gotta taste like a dream. Now go on and get bakin’!

One last thing: don’t forget to keep it simple. No need for fancy tools or hard-to-find ingredients. Just good, honest ingredients and a whole lotta love. That’s the secret to any good dessert, coal or no coal.
