Well, let me tell you ’bout them old-timey sweets, the kind they ate way back when, in that Victorian time, you know? Them fancy folks, they had some different ideas ’bout desserts, let me tell ya.

Them Cakes and Such

They had all sorts of cakes, more than you could shake a stick at. Coffee cake, that was a good one, and cream cakes too, all soft and fluffy. And them crullers, twisted up like a rope, fried ’til they was golden brown. Cookies, they had a whole mess of cookies, all different kinds. Seemed like they had a cake for ever’thin’, holidays and all. And for the little ‘uns, they made this Victoria Sponge, light and fluffy, ‘cause they thought them other cakes with fruits and seeds was bad for ‘em. Can you believe that? Kids these days eat anythin’.

Puddings and Dumplings, Oh My!

Now, them puddings, they was somethin’ else. Bread puddin’, made with old bread, milk, and eggs, that was a good way to use up leftovers, nothin’ went to waste back then. And trifle, all layered up with cake and fruit and custard, that was a real fancy one. Then there was this Raspberry Summer Pudding, all cool and sweet, perfect for a hot day. And them Apple Dumplings, oh honey, them was somethin’ special. Big ol’ apples wrapped up in dough and baked, you’d spoon into one of them and, well, it was just heavenly, I tell ya.

Other Sweet Treats

And it wasn’t just cakes and puddings, no sirree. They had all sorts of other sweets. Fudge, that was a good one, all chocolatey and rich. And marzipan, made with almonds, all fancy-like. Them Liquorice Allsorts, all them different colors and shapes, and Jelly Babies, soft and chewy. Brandy Balls, for the grown-ups, and little Clove Rocks, hard candies that tasted like, well, cloves. Pear Drops, sweet and fruity, and Coconut Ice, all pink and white. Marshmallows, they had them too, and Bonbons, all pretty and wrapped up tight. Chocolate Limes, that was a strange one, and Toffee, that was a good one to chew on. And then there was them Wine Gums, all different flavors. My, oh my, they had a sweet tooth, them Victorians.

The Big Meals

Now, them desserts, they came after a big meal, mind you. They’d have roast meats, like beef or lamb, or even some fancy birds like pheasant. And lots of vegetables, whatever was in season, like asparagus or peas or potatoes. And they always had some kind of sauce to go with it, rich and creamy, you know? They ate good back then, even if some of their ideas was a bit strange.

So, that’s the lowdown on them Victorian desserts. A whole lotta sweets, and some strange ideas, but they sure knew how to eat, I tell ya. It makes you wonder what them fancy folks would think of all the sweets we got now. Probably think we’re plumb crazy, just like we think some of their stuff is a bit odd. But hey, that’s the way of the world, ain’t it? Things change, and what folks like changes too.
