Well, let me tell ya, back in the 1950s, desserts weren’t like all them fancy things you see today. We didn’t have no time for that! We made do with what we had, and let me tell you, it was good! Real good!
Cookies, now those were a staple. Plain sugar cookies, sometimes with a little chocolate chip if we were feelin’ fancy. Ginger cookies, molasses cookies, and oatmeal cookies with raisins, those were the everyday kind. Nothin’ too special, but they filled your belly and made the kids happy. You know, kids these days with their Oreos and whatnots, they don’t know what real good is.

Puddings were another big thing. Tapioca, butterscotch, vanilla – the simple kinds. Rice pudding, bread pudding, and chocolate pudding too. We didn’t have no fancy boxes to mix up, no siree. We made it from scratch, with milk and eggs and sugar. It took time, but it was worth it. And ice cream? Oh, that was a treat! We didn’t have them big freezers like you got now, so ice cream was somethin’ special. Sherbet too. Kids loved it on a hot day.
Then there was cake. Now, cake wasn’t an everyday thing, but when we made it, we made it good. Coconut chiffon cake, that was somethin’ else. Light and fluffy, with that coconut flavor, mm-hmm! And pies, don’t get me started on pies! Banana cream pie, that was a good one. Made it with real bananas, not that fake stuff. And sometimes, we’d get fancy and make a Baked Alaska. Heard they called it “Bombe Alaska” too. It was ice cream and cake all covered in meringue. Looked real pretty and tasted even better.
We didn’t have all them fancy ingredients you got now. But we had canned pineapple, and that was a godsend! Made it easy to whip up a dessert. Pineapple upside-down cake, pineapple pudding, just throw some pineapple in anything, and it tasted good. It was new and easy, and that’s what we liked.
You know, some folks say these old-timey desserts are comin’ back. Retro, they call it. Well, I say they never went away. They’re good, plain and simple. Quick, delicious, festive and fun, that’s what they are. And they remind you of a simpler time, when things weren’t so complicated.
I remember seein’ my grandbabies gettin’ all excited about these new desserts and drinks. But ya know, they always came back to my old banana cream pie recipe. It’s full of flavor, the real kind, not that artificial stuff. And that maraschino cherry rice pudding? My grandkids loved it. Said it was the best thing they ever tasted. And on a hot summer day, nothing beat a thick strawberry shake. Full of real fruit, nothin’ but the best for my little ones.
Grandma always said, “Good food doesn’t need to be fancy.” And she was right. These 1950s desserts, they weren’t fancy, but they were good. They filled you up and made you happy. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it? So if you’re looking for a taste of the past, somethin’ simple and sweet, give these old-fashioned desserts a try. You won’t be disappointed. You might even find yourself craving more. You see, good food is good food, no matter when or where you eat it. And sometimes, the simplest things are the best.
I’m just a simple person, I don’t know all those fancy words, but I know what good food tastes like. And these 1950s desserts, they’re good food. They remind me of home, of family, of simpler times. And that’s somethin’ worth savourin’, ain’t it?
