Alright, let’s talk ’bout them California desserts, the sweet stuff they got out there. I ain’t no fancy food writer or nothin’, just tellin’ ya what’s what, the way I see it.
So, first off, they got these things, real special-like, they call ’em “unique desserts.” Sounds fancy, huh? But what it really means is they ain’t like the pies and cakes your grandma used to make, no sir. These things, they got stuff in ’em you wouldn’t even think of puttin’ in a dessert. Almost a whole meal, they say. I reckon that means they’re big, maybe? More bang for your buck, I guess.

- One time, I heard tell of a dessert out there, looked like a big ol’ raindrop.
- They call it “Mizu Shingen Mochi,” somethin’ like that.
- Sounds like gibberish to me, but folks say it’s real delicate, gotta eat it quick before it melts away like a snowflake in July.
Now, they say this raindrop dessert come from Japan, some fella brought it over here. Started in New York, I hear, and then made its way to California. Folks out there, they like tryin’ new things, I guess. Me? I like a good ol’ apple pie, but to each their own, right?
California, that’s a big place, lots of different folks, so you know they got all sorts of sweets. Down south, in Southern California, they got a whole bunch of these “unique” desserts. I reckon it’s ’cause of all the sunshine and fancy folks down there. They like things pretty and different, not just plain and simple like us.
I seen pictures, once, in a magazine at the doctor’s office. These desserts, they ain’t just thrown together, no sir. They got swirls and drizzles and all kinds of fancy fixin’s on top. Looked too pretty to eat, almost. But then again, I ain’t never met a dessert I couldn’t handle.
They use all sorts of fruits and nuts and things you wouldn’t think of. Avocados in desserts? Who ever heard of such a thing? But them California folks, they put avocados in everything, I swear. And then there’s all them fancy spices, cinnamon and nutmeg and things I can’t even pronounce. Makes your head spin, just thinkin’ about it.
But listen here, it ain’t all just fancy stuff. You can still find a good ol’ scoop of ice cream or a slice of cake, don’t you worry. But even them ice cream places, they got flavors you wouldn’t believe. Lavender honey? Salted caramel? Sounds crazy, but I bet it tastes pretty good. I ain’t tried it myself, mind you, but I heard tell.
And don’t even get me started on the prices. These fancy desserts, they ain’t cheap. You gotta pay a pretty penny for a little bit of somethin’ sweet. But I guess that’s the price you pay for bein’ fancy, right? Me? I’d rather have a whole pie for the price of one of them little bitty desserts. But that’s just me.
So, if you ever find yourself out in California, and you got a hankerin’ for somethin’ sweet, go on and try one of them “unique” desserts. Maybe you’ll like it, maybe you won’t. But at least you can say you tried it. And if you don’t like it, well, there’s always a good ol’ donut shop around the corner, I reckon. Can’t go wrong with a donut, now can ya?

Now, I ain’t sayin’ I know everything about these California desserts, but I told ya what I know. It’s a whole different world out there, food-wise. They got all sorts of things we ain’t even dreamed of. But that’s what makes life interestin’, ain’t it? Tryin’ new things, seein’ new places. Even if it’s just a different kind of dessert.
And remember, no matter how fancy it looks, a sweet treat is a sweet treat. Whether it’s a raindrop cake or a slice of apple pie, it’s all meant to make you happy. So go on and enjoy it, whatever it is.
