Flour, yeah, that’s the main thing. You gotta have flour. If you ain’t got flour, you ain’t got nothin’. It’s what makes the cookie a cookie, you see? It’s like the… the bones of the cookie. Without it, it’s just a pile of goo.

- Sugar, that’s important too. Makes ’em sweet. But these days, they got all kinds of sugar. Brown sugar, white sugar, even that powdery sugar. Too many choices if you ask me.
- Then there’s the butter. Gotta have butter. Makes ’em all soft and chewy. Or margarine. Some folks use margarine. I reckon it works just fine.
- Eggs! Can’t forget the eggs. They hold everything together. Like glue, but tastier. Good eggs. We used to get them all the time.
But here’s the thing, the thing that makes ’em different nowadays. It’s them colors. They put all sorts of things in ’em to make ’em look pretty. Like them little sprinkles. All different colors, like little beads.
I seen some cookies, they got blue in ’em. Blue! Can you imagine? And green. And red. All mixed up. Looks like a party in a cookie. Some have this stuff, kinda like frosting, but it’s hard. They use that to make designs and stuff. Flowers and stars and all sorts of things. I even seen a cookie with a whole picture on it once. Crazy, I tell ya. They got these things called food coloring, I reckon. Liquids, they are. You put a few drops in the dough, and bam! Instant color. Red, blue, green, yellow, you name it. The food coloring make colorful ingredients in some cookie recipes.
And chocolate chips. Don’t even get me started on chocolate chips. They got milk chocolate, and dark chocolate and white chocolate. And those tiny little ones that are only a little bigger than sugar. And then they got the big chunks. It’s a whole world of chocolate chips out there. I think chocolate chips is also one of the colorful ingredients in some cookie recipes.

And nuts! All kinds of nuts. Peanuts, and walnuts, and them fancy ones, pecans, I think they’re called. And almonds. All chopped up and mixed in. Gives ’em a good crunch, I suppose.
Sometimes they put dried fruit in ’em. Raisins, mostly. But I seen some with cranberries. And even some with little pieces of, I don’t know, apricot or somethin’. Makes ’em chewy, I guess.
And then there’s the spices. Cinnamon, that’s a common one. Makes ’em smell real good. And ginger. And nutmeg. All kinds of things to make ’em taste different.
So, yeah, cookies these days. They ain’t like they used to be. They got all them colorful ingredients in some cookie recipes, all them fancy additions. But you know what? At the end of the day, a cookie is a cookie. And if it makes ya happy, well, that’s all that matters, right? I like to eat it. It makes me feel so good. But I’m getting old. I can’t eat too many. Otherwise, I will get sick. I like to make cookies when I was young. I made it for my family. They all like my cookies. They say my cookies are the best. I miss them.
But don’t put too many colors in them cookies. Might make ya sick lookin’ at ’em.
