Okay, so, the other day, I was looking for something fun to do with my kids, and I thought, “Why not hit up the state fair?” It’s summer, and I was getting all nostalgic for those classic fair treats. This year, the Indiana State Fair had this cool theme, “The Art & Nature of Fun,” which sounded neat. It was a mix of art stuff and the outdoors, and they teamed up with Newfields, which is like this big nature park and art museum place in Indy.
First things first, I had to track down the funnel cakes. I mean, is it really a fair without them? I found a stand over at Dickel’s Smokehouse in the Cotton Bowl Plaza, right on First Avenue.

Here’s what I did:
-
Got the Funnel Cakes
I ordered a couple of funnel cakes, one for each of my kids. They were huge! The batter was deep-fried to perfection. The cakes were golden and crispy on the outside, all fluffy on the inside. They dusted them with a ton of powdered sugar, and the kids were in heaven. Sticky fingers and happy faces all around.
-
Tried the Caramel Apples
After the funnel cakes, we went for something a bit different. We found a place selling caramel apples and candy apples. It was hard to choose, but I went for the classic caramel apple. They dipped this big, juicy apple in this thick, gooey caramel. It was a bit messy, but oh man, it was so good. The sweet caramel with the tart apple was a perfect match.
-
Fried Pickle Chips
Then I saw something that caught my eye – fried pickle chips. I had to give them a try. They sliced up some pickles, battered them, and deep-fried them until they were crispy. They served them with this tangy sauce, they called it a comeback sauce. It was tangy, creamy, and had a little kick to it. I never thought I’d like fried pickles, but they were surprisingly tasty.
So yeah, that was my little adventure at the state fair. We had a blast trying out all these classic treats. It was a good day filled with good food, and I made some sweet memories with my kids. I’d say, if you get a chance, definitely check out the fair. Just be ready to indulge in some seriously tasty, and maybe a bit messy, treats!
