Okay, let’s talk about this Hurricane Malt Beverage. I saw this stuff at Ralphs the other day and thought, “Why not?” I mean, I’m always up for trying something new, especially when it comes to drinks.
So, I grabbed a 40 oz bottle. It was pretty cheap, so I wasn’t expecting much. I took it home, chilled it in the fridge for a bit, and then popped the cap. It says that it’s a high-gravity malt liquor, but I think it’s just a marketing trick.

- First, the smell. It was kind of… well, it smelled like a regular beer, maybe a bit sweeter. Nothing too crazy.
- Then, the taste. I took a swig, and honestly, it was surprisingly smooth. The label says it has a “full-bodied flavor with a bold finish,” and I guess that’s about right. It had a decent beer taste, maybe a little on the sweet side, and it did have a bit of a kick at the end. It says it contains 0.081 alcohol, which is considered high.
- The ingredients. After tasting it, I checked the ingredients, but it seems that the bottle I bought doesn’t have a complete list, so I can only find a few ingredients that I have searched for online, such as water, sugar, carbon dioxide, etc.
I drank the whole thing, and yeah, it’s definitely got some alcohol in it. I started feeling it pretty quickly. I’m not sure I’d drink it all the time, but it was an interesting experience. It’s not something I’d usually go for.
Overall, it was okay. It did give me a bit of a buzz. I think that’s the effect of high-gravity brewing. Would I buy it again? Maybe, if I was looking for something cheap and strong. But I think there are better-tasting beers out there. This one’s more about the effect than the flavor. It’s a cheap way to get a buzz. But for a regular drinking night? I’d probably pass and stick to my usual stuff.
It’s said to have a shelf life of 365 days, but who knows whether the one I bought at Ralphs was produced that long ago? Anyway, that’s my little adventure with Hurricane Malt Beverage. It wasn’t life-changing, but it was definitely something.
