Okay, so, I’ve been meaning to try out some of these “savory sweet” dessert things I keep seeing pop up. You know, the kind that mix, like, bacon with chocolate or put herbs in your ice cream? Sounds kinda weird, but I’m all about trying new stuff in the kitchen. So, I figured, why not give it a shot and see what all the fuss is about?
First off, I went and grabbed a bunch of ingredients from the store. I’m talking bacon, some fancy olive oil, fresh basil, rosemary, and, of course, the usual dessert suspects like chocolate, flour, sugar, and all that jazz. I felt a little crazy putting all this stuff in my cart, but hey, gotta commit, right?

Bacon and Chocolate
- Cook the bacon: I started with the bacon-chocolate combo, ’cause that’s the one you always hear about. I fried up some bacon until it was nice and crispy, just how I like it.
- Melt the chocolate: Then I melted down some dark chocolate, which was pretty straightforward. I’m no chocolatier, but I’ve melted chocolate for dipping strawberries before, no biggie.
- Combine and cool: Here’s where it gets interesting. I crumbled the bacon into the melted chocolate, mixed it all up, and spread it out on some parchment paper. Then I popped it in the fridge to let it set.
Olive Oil and Rosemary
- Infuse the olive oil: For the olive oil cake, it was a bit more involved. I gently heated up some good quality olive oil with fresh rosemary. Smelled amazing, by the way. Like, I could just bottle that scent up.
- Bake the cake: I followed a basic cake recipe but swapped out regular oil for my rosemary-infused one. The batter smelled kinda herby, which was a little weird, but I trusted the process.
Basil Ice Cream
- Make a custard base: Ice cream was the most intimidating, not gonna lie. I made a custard with milk, cream, sugar, and egg yolks. Then, I blended a bunch of fresh basil into it, which turned it this crazy green color.
- Churn the ice cream: I don’t have an ice cream maker, but I used the old “freeze and stir” method. Took forever, and my arm got tired, but it eventually started to look like ice cream.
Alright, so after all that work, how did they turn out? The bacon-chocolate thing? Surprisingly good! The salty crunch of the bacon with the rich chocolate was a total win. I’d definitely make that again. The olive oil cake was moist and had this subtle herby flavor that was actually really nice. It wasn’t overly sweet, which I appreciated. And the basil ice cream? Let’s just say it was… interesting. It was refreshing, for sure, but I don’t know if I’d make it again. Maybe for a fancy dinner party or something.
So, yeah, that was my adventure with savory sweet desserts. It was a fun little experiment, and I’m glad I tried it. I think I’ll stick to the bacon-chocolate combo for now, but who knows, maybe I’ll get adventurous again soon. There are so many crazy combinations out there waiting to be tried!
