Okay, so, I really wanted to do something special for Labor Day, you know, a proper send-off for summer. And what better way to celebrate than with some killer desserts? I’m not exactly a whiz in the kitchen, but I figured, how hard could it be, right?
I started off thinking I’d keep it simple. Maybe some cookies or brownies. But then I got ambitious. I thought, “Go big or go home!” So I decided to try a bunch of different things to see what worked. I mean who would ever want to celebrate in a same way? We need to try something new, right?

My Baking Marathon
First up, I tried making a strawberry shortcake. I found this recipe online that used Bisquick, which seemed easy enough. The photos on the website look so yummy and it seems so easy to make. Let me try it out! I mixed the batter, which was surprisingly easy, no crazy techniques or anything.
And then I baked it, and well, it looked alright. The taste? Let’s just say it was a good first try. It wasn’t too bad, but it didn’t exactly taste like those fancy ones you get at bakeries, you know? But, hey, it was edible, and that’s a win in my book. So I served it to my guests, they just finished it within minutes. That’s absolutely a big encouragement for me!
Next, I wanted to do something a bit more classic. I went for a good old-fashioned apple pie. Now, this one was a bit more challenging. Making the crust from scratch was a whole thing. I rolled out the dough, tried to get it into the pie dish without it tearing, which was a bit of a struggle, I won’t lie. It took me a lot of time to deal with it. I just wanna make a pie not to take exercise here!
But I got it in there eventually. Then I made the filling, which was just apples, sugar, cinnamon, and a few other things. I baked it for what felt like forever, and when it came out, it actually looked pretty good! It smelled amazing, too. I think I nailed this one. Everyone said it was delicious, so I’m feeling pretty proud of myself. It is worth for me to spend so much time on making this pie! I will definitely make it again!
Then, feeling a bit bolder, I decided to try something totally new. I saw this recipe for a no-bake cheesecake and thought, “Why not?” I mean, no baking involved, how hard could it be? The preparation was a breeze, just mixing a bunch of ingredients together. The crust was just crushed cookies and butter, easy peasy. But, the wait for it to set in the fridge was torture! I am so worried that it will fail! I even couldn’t fall in sleep.
But when I finally took it out and tried it, it was surprisingly good! It was creamy, and sweet, and just the right amount of tangy. It’s a good one for summer because it’s so light and refreshing. I’d definitely make this one again, especially if I’m short on time. But if I have plenty of time, I would still choose to make the apple pie.
By the end of the day, my kitchen was a mess. I mean, flour everywhere, dishes piled up, the whole nine yards. But, you know what? It was worth it. I had a table full of desserts, some better than others, but all made by me. And everyone seemed to enjoy them, which was the best part. Even my kids just kept asking for more!

Lessons Learned
- Don’t be afraid to try new things. Even if they don’t turn out perfect, it’s all part of the fun.
- Read the recipe carefully. I know, it sounds obvious, but sometimes I get a little ahead of myself and miss a step.
- Baking takes time. You can’t rush it, especially with things like pies and cakes.
- No-bake options are a lifesaver. Seriously, if you’re not a pro baker, these are your best friends.
- It’s okay to make a mess. Just be prepared to clean it up afterward, maybe your family would be happy to help you with that.
So, that’s my Labor Day dessert adventure. It was messy, it was fun, and it was definitely delicious. I might not be a master baker, but I’m learning. And I’m already thinking about what I’m going to make next. Maybe I’ll try a cake from scratch? Or some fancy cookies? The possibilities are endless! If you are a baking lover like me, you should definitely try it out!
