Okay, so, today I wanted to try making those colorful goldfish crackers, you know, the ones that are super popular with the kids? I figured, why not give it a shot? They look fun, and I was curious about what actually goes into them.
First things first, I had to gather up all the stuff I needed. It wasn’t too crazy, mostly things I already had in my kitchen. I grabbed some all-purpose flour, cheddar cheese, cause what’s a goldfish cracker without cheese, right? Then some salt, cold butter – that part’s important, it has to be cold, and a little bit of water. Oh, and to make them rainbow, I needed food coloring. I found a variety of colors I already bought before.

I started by mixing the dry stuff – the flour and salt. Then I grated the cheese and tossed that in. Next up, I cut the cold butter into small pieces and used my hands to kind of rub it into the flour mixture. It’s a bit messy, but you want it to look like coarse crumbs.
After that, I divided the dough into a few different bowls, one for each color I wanted to use. I added a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and mixed it in. It took some work to get the color evenly distributed, but it was kind of fun, like playing with Play-Doh.
Once I had all my different colored doughs, I rolled each one out into a thin sheet. Then came the tricky part – cutting out the little fish shapes. I don’t have a fish-shaped cookie cutter, so I just used a knife. It was a little time-consuming, but I got into a rhythm after a while.
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 8 ounces cheddar cheese, grated
- 8 tablespoons (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1/4 cup cold water
- Food coloring (various colors)
Ingredients
I preheated my oven to 350°F (175°C) and put my little fishies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. They only needed to bake for about 12-15 minutes. I kept a close eye on them to make sure they didn’t burn.
When they came out of the oven, they smelled amazing! I let them cool for a bit, and then I tried one. Not bad, if I do say so myself! They were crispy and cheesy, and the colors were so vibrant. I think they turned out pretty well for a first try. It was a fun little baking experiment, and now I know exactly what goes into those rainbow goldfish crackers!
It’s a good activity to do with kids, I think. Though, I’d probably get a fish-shaped cookie cutter next time, to save some time and effort.
