Okay, so I’ve been wanting to spruce up my kitchen for a while now, and I finally decided to tackle the floor situation. I had this bare, boring space in front of my sink, and it was just begging for something… cozy. I thought, “Why not try making a woven kitchen rug?” I’d seen some cute ones online, but they were either too expensive or not quite the right style. So, DIY it was!
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to figure out what material I wanted to use. I knew I wanted something durable and easy to clean, since, you know, it’s the kitchen. I considered using old t-shirts, but then I stumbled upon this awesome, thick yarn at the craft store. It was kind of a chunky, cotton blend, and it felt super sturdy. Plus, it came in this perfect shade of gray-blue that matched my kitchen cabinets. Sold!

Then came the tricky part: the weaving frame. I’m not gonna lie, I’m not the handiest person. I didn’t have any fancy weaving tools, so I decided to build a super simple frame out of some scrap wood I had lying around. Seriously, it was just four pieces of wood nailed together in a rectangle. Nothing pretty, but it did the job!
The Weaving Process(My arm almost fall!)
Now for the actual weaving. I started by tying the yarn to one end of the frame, and then I just started wrapping it around and around, creating the warp (that’s the vertical part, if you’re not familiar with weaving lingo, like me before this project!). It took a while, and my arms definitely got a workout. I made sure to keep the yarn pretty tight, so the rug would be nice and firm.
Once the warp was done, I started weaving the weft (the horizontal part) through it. I used a big, blunt needle – the kind you’d use for yarn – to make it easier. It was basically just an over-under, over-under pattern, going back and forth, row by row. Honestly, it was kind of therapeutic, once I got the hang of it. Like, really, really zen. I did make that simple!
- Step 1: Wrap, wrap, wrap the yarn for the warp.
- Step 2: Over-under, over-under with the weft.
I experimented with different weaving patterns, trying to create some texture. I did some basic tabby weave (that’s the over-under one), and then I tried some twill weave, which creates a diagonal pattern. It’s a little more complicated, but it looked pretty cool.
I tell you,it took some time and patients!
Finishing Touches
After what felt like forever (but was probably only a few hours), I finally reached the end. I tied off the yarn, trimmed the edges, and… voila! My very own, handmade woven kitchen rug. I even added some simple fringe to the ends, just to give it a little extra something.

I’m not gonna lie, it’s not perfect. There are a few wonky spots, and the edges aren’t exactly straight. But, you know what? I love it! It adds so much warmth and personality to my kitchen, and it’s so satisfying to know that I made it myself. Plus, it’s super comfy to stand on while I’m doing dishes. Bonus!
So, yeah, that’s my woven kitchen rug adventure. It was a fun, relatively easy project, and I’m really happy with how it turned out. If you’re looking for a way to add some handmade charm to your kitchen (or any room, really), I definitely recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a bit of an arm workout!
