So, the other day, I got this wild idea to explore Finnish drinks. I’ve always been curious about different cultures, and what better way to get a taste (literally!) than through their booze? I started with pretty much zero knowledge, just a vague notion that Finland probably had some interesting stuff.
The Research Phase
First things first, I hit the internet. I typed in some basic searches like “Finnish alcohol” and “traditional Finnish drinks.” I quickly learned about a few key things:
- Alko: This is the government-run liquor store. Apparently, it’s the only place to buy anything stronger than 5.5% alcohol. Talk about control!
- Long drinks(lonkero):It is so popular in Finnish.
- Koskenkorva Viina: This seemed to be a big deal. It’s like a clear spirit, kind of like vodka, but apparently with its own unique character.
- Salmiakki Koskenkorva: Okay, this one sounded weird. Salmiakki is salty licorice, and they put it in their booze?! I had to try it.
- Sima: A homemade mead.
The Shopping Trip
I find a store has some finnish drinks. I was on the hunt. I was so happy find lonkero and Koskenkorva. They have different types of Koskenkorva. Then I grabbed one bottle—had to start somewhere, right?
The Tasting
I tried lonkero. It is good taste, a mixs of citrus and sweetness.
I poured a small amount of the Koskenkorva. I took a sip and took my * has unique character.
So, that’s my Finnish alcoholic beverage journey so far! I definitely want to explore more, maybe try to find some of that Salmiakki Koskenkorva next time. It’s been a fun, and slightly tipsy, learning experience!
