Okay, so I’ve been wanting to expand my culinary horizons, and Afghani cuisine has always intrigued me. I decided to try and put together a basic Afghani menu, just to get a feel for the dishes and flavors. Here’s how it went down:
First, I did some digging. I mean, I knew nothing about Afghani food. I started with a simple search, looking for “most popular Afghani dishes.” That gave me a starting point, a few names to work with.

Then I spent a good while looking at different recipes. Some seemed super complicated, others looked manageable. I wanted a mix of both, to challenge myself a little but not get totally overwhelmed.
My Experimental Afghani Menu
I decided my menu was going to have the following:
- Kabuli Palaw: This seemed like the national dish, so it was a must-try. Rice, lamb, carrots, raisins… sounded delicious and hearty.
- Mantu: These are dumplings filled with meat and onions, topped with a yogurt sauce. I love dumplings of all kinds, so I was excited about these.
- Bolani: A kind of stuffed flatbread. I figured this would be a good side, and it seemed relatively easy to make.
- Afghan Salad:have cucumber, tomato, onion, carrot. This seemed like a nice, refreshing addition to balance out the richer dishes.
- Sheer Khurma:For dessert, I chose a simple sweet, because the main dishes were going to take up most of my energy!
Putting this menu together was a bit of a learning curve. Finding good recipes took time, and figuring out which ingredients I could actually get my hands on was another hurdle. But, it was fun! It felt like a little adventure, exploring a new cuisine right from my own kitchen. The menu, in the end, it looks good, very good to me. I was very excited and wanted to cook immediately!
