So, I’ve been messing around with making my own drinks lately, you know, just for fun. Started looking into this whole “alcohol malt beverages” thing. It sounded kinda fancy, but really it’s just, like, beer and stuff, right?
First, I gathered all my stuff. I didn’t have any fancy equipment, just some basic kitchen things. I found a big pot, a couple of buckets (cleaned ’em real good, obviously), and a thermometer. I even dug out an old hydrometer I had lying around from… I don’t even remember.

My Simple Steps
- Mashing: Okay, this part was kinda like making oatmeal. I heated up some water in the pot and dumped in some crushed grains – I think it was barley? I stirred it around and kept the temperature steady for, like, an hour. It smelled… grainy.
- Sparging: This sounded complicated, but it’s basically just rinsing. I slowly poured more hot water over the grains to wash out all the sugary goodness.
- Boiling: Then I boiled the sugary water (it’s called “wort” – who knew?) for a while. I tossed in some hops, which are these little green things that make it bitter. It smelled kinda like… beer, but not quite.
- Cooling: I needed to cool this stuff down super fast. I didn’t have a fancy chiller, so I just stuck the pot in a sink full of ice water. Took forever.
- Fermenting: I poured the cooled wort into one of my buckets, sprinkled in some yeast (the magic ingredient!), and slapped on an airlock (this bubbly thing that lets gas out but not in).
- Waiting: This was the hardest part. I just had to sit and wait for, like, two weeks. I checked on it every day, of course, just to make sure nothing exploded.
- Bottling: Finally! I siphoned the beer into some old bottles I’d saved, added a tiny bit of sugar (for the fizz), and capped them.
Then… more waiting! Another week or so for the bottles to carbonate. It was torture!
Finally, I cracked open a bottle. It actually fizzed! And it tasted… well, it tasted like beer! Not the best beer I’ve ever had, for sure, but definitely beer. And I made it! Pretty cool, huh?
