Okay, so I’ve been on this huge Indian food kick lately. Like, seriously, butter chicken and naan have become my go-to comfort meal. But I always felt like something was missing – that perfect sweet ending, you know?
So, I started experimenting. I mean, who doesn’t love a good dessert, right?

My Dessert Quest
My first thought was, “Okay, what do I usually crave after a spicy meal?” Sometimes it’s something creamy, sometimes something fruity, sometimes something totally decadent. I figured the same rules probably applied here. So, I hit up the grocery store and grabbed a bunch of stuff.
- Gulab Jamun: These were a no-brainer. I’d had them at Indian restaurants before, and they’re basically little fried dough balls soaked in rose-flavored syrup. Super sweet, super delicious.
- Rasmalai: These are cheese patties soaked in a creamy, sweet milk sauce. I’d heard good things, so I figured, why not?
- Mango Lassi: Okay, not technically a “dessert,” but it’s sweet, creamy, and made with mangoes, which I love.
- Kulfi: This is Indian ice cream, and it comes in all sorts of flavors. I grabbed pistachio and mango.
- Jalebi: These are like crispy, fried pretzels soaked in syrup. They looked interesting.
The Taste Test (The Fun Part!)
I made a big batch of my favorite chicken tikka masala and some garlic naan. Then, after we ate, I brought out all the desserts. It was a sugar overload, for sure!
Here’s what I discovered:
- Gulab Jamun: Still a winner! The warm, syrupy sweetness was the perfect contrast to the savory meal.
- Rasmalai: This was surprisingly good! The texture was a little different, kind of like a soft, spongy cheese, but the creamy milk sauce was amazing.
- Mango Lassi: Yep, still amazing. It’s like a refreshing, fruity milkshake. It cleansed the palate really well.
- Kulfi: The pistachio kulfi was my favorite. It was creamy and nutty, and not too sweet. The mango kulfi was good too, but the pistachio just went better with the meal, I thought.
- Jalebi: These were…interesting. Very sweet, very crispy. Maybe a little too sweet for me after such a rich meal. I think I prefer them on their own.
My Verdict
Honestly, you can’t go wrong with gulab jamun or rasmalai. They’re classic for a reason. But if you want something a little lighter, the mango lassi or the pistachio kulfi are great choices. The jalebi, well, try it if you’re feeling adventurous! It’s definitely a unique experience.
The most fun is testing the desserts by myself. It’s a hard work but I enjoy it. It turned out that finding a nice dessert to go with Indian food is not that hard. Hope you have fun with Indian food and desserts!
