Okay, so today I wanted to try my hand at making some Wisconsin desserts. I’d heard a lot about the unique sweets from this state, and I was super curious to see what all the fuss was about. I’m not a pro baker or anything, but I love experimenting in the kitchen.
First things first, I did a bit of research. I browsed through some local newspapers, blogs, and a bunch of homemade recipe collections. It was a real mixed bag of stuff, but it gave me a good starting point. I noticed a lot of people talking about how desserts are the best part of the day, and honestly, I couldn’t agree more.
Then I started gathering my ingredients. I wanted to try a few different things to get a feel for what Wisconsin desserts are all about. I decided to make something with chocolate, something with citrus, and something totally out of left field just for fun.
I started with the chocolate one. I found a recipe for a super decadent chocolate cake that seemed pretty popular. I got all the ingredients together – you know, flour, sugar, eggs, a whole lot of chocolate – and got to work. Mixing everything was a bit of a workout, but it was fun. I popped it in the oven and waited. The smell of baking chocolate filled my kitchen, and it was heavenly.

While the cake was baking, I moved on to the citrus dessert. I found this recipe for a lemon bar that looked amazing. I zested a bunch of lemons – my hands smelled like lemon for hours afterward. I mixed the zest with sugar, butter, and some other stuff to make the filling, and made a simple crust for the base. Once the crust was ready, I poured in the lemon filling and baked it until it was golden and set.

Finally, for my wild card, I decided to make something called “Skittles Twists.” I’d seen it mentioned a few times, and it sounded so weird that I just had to try it. It wasn’t really baking, more like assembling. I just had to take some Skittles candies and twist them together into different shapes. It was a bit silly, but it was fun and colorful.

By the time I was done, I had a pretty impressive spread of desserts. The chocolate cake turned out rich and moist, just like I’d hoped. The lemon bars were tart and sweet, a perfect balance. And the Skittles Twists? Well, they were definitely unique. It was a fun day of experimenting, and I definitely satisfied my sweet tooth. It made me realize how much variety there is in Wisconsin desserts, from classic baked goods to quirky candy creations. I’m excited to try making more of these in the future!
After all that baking, my kitchen was a mess, but it was totally worth it. Cleaning up is never fun, but the satisfaction of creating something delicious makes it a little more bearable. Plus, I got to snack on the leftovers while I cleaned, which always helps!
