Oh, those pesky little black ants in the kitchen, always givin’ me a headache! They’re everywhere, ain’t they? Crawlin’ on the counters, in the sugar bowl, even in the darn breadbox! Drives me nuts, I tell ya. I swear, one minute there’s nothin’, the next minute it’s like an ant parade in here. Makes a body wanna just throw the whole kitchen out the window sometimes.

Where do they come from? I ain’t got no fancy answers for ya, but I’ve seen ’em comin’ from under the sink, from that little crack in the wall behind the stove, and even from up above, near the light fixture. They’re sneaky little critters, that’s for sure. They find the tiniest little holes and squeeze right through. And if you leave a crumb, just a teeny tiny crumb mind you, they’ll be on it like stink on a skunk.

I tried everything, y’know. Smackin’ ’em with a dish towel, that works for a bit, but they just keep comin’. Sprayed ’em with that bug spray, the one that smells like a dead rat, but they just scatter for a while then come right back. It’s like they’re laughin’ at me, them little black devils.

  • Vinegar: My neighbor, old Mrs. Henderson, she told me to try vinegar. Said them ants can’t stand the smell. So I mixed some vinegar with water, just like she said, half and half, and wiped down everything. Counters, floors, the whole shebang. And you know what? It did seem to help a little. They didn’t like it one bit. But it ain’t a permanent fix, mind you. They still come back after a while, the little buggers.
  • Borax: Then my niece, she’s a smart one, she told me about somethin’ called borax. Said you mix it with sugar and water, make a sweet syrupy thing, and them ants will carry it back to their nest and it’ll kill the whole colony. Well, I tried that too. Mixed it up real good, put it in little bottle caps, and left ’em around where the ants like to go. And you know what? It worked! At least for a while. Didn’t see them ants for a good long time after that. But then, sure enough, a few weeks later, there they were again, sneakin’ around like they owned the place.

So now I just try to keep things clean, y’know? Wipe up spills right away, don’t leave food out, keep everything in tight containers. It’s a never-ending battle, I tell ya, but I ain’t givin’ up. I ain’t gonna let them little black ants take over my kitchen. No sirree, Bob!

Sometimes, when I’m really fed up, I just get out the vacuum cleaner and suck ’em all up. That makes me feel a little better, seein’ them all disappear into the dust bag. But then I gotta empty the bag right away, ’cause I don’t want them crawlin’ out again. It’s a messy job, but somebody’s gotta do it.

I also heard tell of somethin’ called diatomaceous earth. Sounds fancy, don’t it? My grandson, he’s a whiz with the computer, looked it up for me. Said it’s like a powder made from tiny little shells and it cuts up them ants real bad. Haven’t tried it yet, but it’s on my list. If them ants keep botherin’ me, I’m gonna give it a whirl. Anything to get rid of them pesky little critters.

Prevention is the key, I reckon. Keepin’ things clean, pluggin’ up them holes where they come in, and not leavin’ food out where they can get to it. It’s a lot of work, but it’s better than havin’ them ants crawlin’ all over everything. And if all else fails, well, there’s always the dish towel and the vacuum cleaner. I ain’t afraid to get my hands dirty, that’s for sure.

I’ve even tried puttin’ bay leaves around, someone told me ants hate them too, doesn’t smell as bad as the vinegar, mind you. And those little ant traps you can buy at the store, I’ve tried them too. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. It’s like the ants are gettin’ smarter, I swear. They figure out how to get around everything you throw at them.

But I’m a tough old bird, and I ain’t gonna let them ants get the best of me. I’ll keep fightin’ them, one way or another. It’s my kitchen, and I ain’t gonna share it with no ants! So if you got black ants in your kitchen, don’t you worry. You just gotta keep tryin’ different things until you find somethin’ that works. And remember, you ain’t alone in this battle. We’re all fightin’ them little black ants together.
