You know, that Bombay, they got some good eats. I heard it’s a big, big city, that Mumbai. Lots of people, lots of food. They call it India’s, uh, “bustling metropolis.” What a mouthful! Sounds fancy, but I bet the food is just plain good. They got all kinds of folks living there, so you know the food’s gotta be mixed up, like a good stew. Bombay cuisine, they call it. Sounds important!
My granddaughter, she showed me pictures on that there internet. So many colors! And the smells, she said you could just smell it all down the street. I reckon there’s spicy stuff, sweet stuff, all of it mixed up. They got Muslim food, and something called Goo-jar-rati. And Go-an, that’s another one. They got food from the coast, and from the south of India, too. It’s all there in Bombay. A melting pot, they call it. Like a big ol’ pot of soup with everything thrown in!
They eat a lot of that Indian sweets, too. Sugary things, all different shapes and colors. I bet they’re real sticky and sweet. Little kids must love ’em. My old teeth ain’t what they used to be, but I wouldn’t mind trying a little bite. Maybe with some tea.
They say there’s 40, can you believe it, 40 foods you gotta try in Mumbai. Forty! That’s a lot of eating. I don’t know if my old belly could handle all that. But it sure does sound exciting.
- They got this thing, a “thali” they call it, from that Goo-jar-rati place. Sounds like a whole plate full of different things.
- And snacks! Oh, they love their snacks. Little bites of this and that. They even make new kinds of snacks, mixing things up.
- I bet they got rice dishes, all kinds of rice. Maybe with some of that spicy sauce.
- And bread. I bet they got all kinds of flatbreads, cooked right there on the street.
That Bombay cuisine, it’s got something for everyone, I reckon. Even an old lady like me could find something tasty. Spicy, sweet, sour, you name it. They say the food tells a story, the story of Mumbai. All those different people, all those different flavors, all mixed up together.
I saw a picture of a man selling food on the street. Big pots, steam coming off ’em. People all crowded around, waiting for a taste. That’s how you know the food is good. When people line up for it, it’s gotta be worth it.
They got these things called, uh, “street food.” Food you buy right there on the street from little carts. Sounds kinda risky, but my granddaughter, she says it’s the best food in Bombay. She said you gotta try the “vada pav.” Sounds like some kind of sandwich. And “pani puri,” little crispy balls filled with something.
You know, Indian sweets are famous all over. All them bright colors, that’s what catches your eye. They look like little jewels, almost too pretty to eat. But you know they are delicious. Full of sugar and butter, I bet.
- They got this one, “jalebi,” I think it’s called. Looks like a twisted-up pretzel, all orange and shiny.
- And “gulab jamun,” those are little balls, soaked in sweet syrup.
- They got something called “kulfi” too, I think that’s like their ice cream.
All those Indian sweets, they make my mouth water just thinking about ’em. I bet they make ’em special for holidays and festivals. Big celebrations, with lots of food and music. That’s how they do it over there.

If you ever go to Bombay, you gotta try the food. That’s what everyone says. Don’t be scared of the spices, just jump right in. Try a little bit of everything. That Bombay cuisine, it’s a real adventure for your taste buds. It is just like life, all sorts of things.
And don’t forget the sweets! Save room for dessert, that’s what I always say. A little something sweet makes everything better. Especially those Indian sweets, they look like a real treat. Maybe one day I’ll get to try ’em myself. Until then, I’ll just dream about ’em. And maybe look at some more pictures on that internet. It’s a whole world of food out there, just waiting to be tasted.
I heard that they eat with their hands there. They scoop up the food with that bread. Sounds messy, but probably fun. And they use all sorts of spices. I don’t know the name of those. But just imagine the taste. It must be good, if so many people are eating this. Food always tastes better when you eat it with your hands. That’s what my mama used to say. And she was always right about food.
That Bombay cuisine, it’s more than just food. It’s a part of who they are. It’s their history, their culture, all mixed up in a big pot. And those Indian sweets, they’re like the icing on the cake. The sweet ending to a good meal. It is good to have a sweet ending.
