Alright, let’s yak about them desserts, the ones startin’ with the letter G, you know? Folks always gettin’ fancy with names, but I just call ’em sweets.
Good Ol’ Grape Salad

First thing comin’ to my mind, that creamy grape salad stuff. Don’t know all them fancy names, but it’s got grapes, and it’s creamy, makes sense, right? My neighbor, Martha, she makes it sometimes. Real simple, she says. Just grapes, some kinda cream stuff, maybe some sugar. Kids love it, though. Always gobblin’ it down at them summer get-togethers. It’s sweet, it’s cool, perfect for a hot day. And it’s got them grapes, so it’s kinda healthy, ain’t it? Well, healthier than them fried pies, anyhow.
- Grapes – Gotta have ’em, them green or purple ones, doesn’t matter much.
- Creamy stuff – Martha uses somethin’ called sour cream, I think, and some of that fluffy whipped cream stuff.
- Sugar – A bit of sugar, not too much, you don’t want it too sweet. Makes your teeth hurt, you know.
You just mix it all up, stick it in the fridge, and there you go. Dessert! Easy peasy. This creamy grape salad is real popular with the young’uns. They say it’s the best thing ever, but kids always say that about anything sweet, don’t they?
That Fancy Gelato Thing
Then there’s that other thing, starts with a G… Gee-la-toe? Sounds foreign, don’t it? My grandson, he went to the city once and told me about it. Said it’s like ice cream, but fancier. More…flavorful, he said. I reckon it’s just ice cream with a big price tag, but what do I know? He said they got all kinds of flavors, chocolate, vanilla, even some weird stuff like…mango, or somethin’. Sounded like a bunch of hooey to me, but he liked it. Said it was real smooth and creamy, melted in your mouth. If you wanna feel highfalutin, I guess that’s what you’d get. This gelato dessert is real smooth I hear.
I still like my plain ol’ vanilla, myself. Can’t go wrong with vanilla. But this gelato, I guess it’s a dessert, startin’ with G, just like you asked. My grandson said it has a real creamy texture and tastes better than regular ice cream, but when he showed me the picture, it looked like ice cream to me. It looks pretty, all swirly and stuff, but I don’t know if it’s worth all the fuss. I am happy to just have a bowl of plain ice cream and not that gelato thing.
Grandma’s Gingerbread (Sometimes!)
Now, sometimes, and I mean sometimes, ’cause it’s a whole lotta work, I make gingerbread. My grandma’s recipe, she used to make it all the time around Christmas. Smelled so good, the whole house would smell like spices and molasses. It ain’t easy, though. Gotta get the spices just right, and the dough, it can be tricky. But when it comes out good, oh boy, it’s worth it. Warm, soft, spicy…perfect with a glass of milk. My kids always loved it. Now, my grandkids, they like it too, but they’re more into them store-bought cookies. Don’t know what they’re missin’, I tell ya.

Gingerbread is a good dessert, especially around the holidays. It’s warm, it’s spicy and it fills your belly good. It’s got that ginger in it, makes it kinda…zingy. And the molasses, that gives it a nice, dark color and a rich flavor. You can make it into cookies, or a cake, or even a house, if you’re feelin’ fancy. But I just stick to the cookies. Easier that way. This gingerbread treat brings back a lot of memories.
Other “G” Desserts – Heard Tell Of
There’s probably other G desserts out there. My friend Betty, she talks about some kinda pudding, said it’s called German chocolate somethin’-or-other. I reckon she just likes saying big words and putting on airs, that Betty! She says it’s got chocolate and coconut and pecans, all layered up pretty. Sounds rich, too rich for my blood. Never tried it, myself. I’m more of a simple sweets kind of gal. But I guess it counts, right? Dessert, starts with G. She makes it with some sort of gooey filling that she says takes hours to make.
And then there’s… what do they call it…afters? Sometimes people call dessert “afters,” I heard. Guess that ain’t really a G word, though, is it? Anyways, after your supper, you have your sweets. That’s all that matters. Whether it’s grapes, or gelato, or gingerbread, or some fancy pudding, it’s all dessert to me. And if it starts with G, well, that’s just a bonus, ain’t it?
So there you have it, all I know ‘bout them G desserts. Not much, I reckon, but enough to fill your belly and make you smile. That’s all that matters in the end, a full belly and a happy heart, that’s what I always say.
