Well, let me tell ya about this A&W root beer, the stuff them young folks are always guzzlin’ down. I don’t rightly know what all them fancy words on the bottle mean, but I can tell ya what I reckon is in it.

First off, there’s that bubbly water, the kind that makes ya burp. They call it “carbonated water,” sounds like somethin’ you’d put in a car, not in your belly! But it’s what makes the drink all fizzy and fun.
Then there’s the sweet stuff. Oh boy, is it sweet! They say it’s “high fructose corn syrup.” Sounds like somethin’ made in a factory, not somethin’ natural like honey. But I guess that’s why them young’uns like it so much. Too much sugar if you ask me! Gives ya the jitters and rots your teeth, just like my old granny used to say.
- One time, my grandson Billy drank three of them big bottles in one sittin’.
- He was runnin’ around like a chicken with its head cut off, couldn’t sit still for a minute.
- I told him, “Billy, slow down! You’re gonna make yourself sick!” But he didn’t listen. Kids these days, they never listen.
Next up, there’s that brown color. They call it “caramel color.” Now, caramel, I know. It’s that sticky stuff ya make with sugar and butter. But I reckon this here color is made different. Probably got some chemicals in it, like most things these days. Makes your teeth look brown when you smile, not pretty at all I tell ya.
And then there’s all them flavorin’s. “Natural and artificial flavors,” they say. What does that even mean? Some of it’s probably from plants, like that sassafras they used to put in it. But some of it’s probably made in a lab, by folks in white coats. Makes you wonder what you’re really puttin’ in your body.
They got this thing called “Quillaia Extract” in it too. Sounds like some kinda medicine, makes me think of old Doc Johnson and his bitter pills.

I like the taste, can’t lie bout that, reminds me of when I was young and my Pa used to take us to the town fair. But I still rather have a glass of good old iced tea.
They also put in some stuff to keep it fresh, “sodium benzoate” they call it. Preservatives, they are. Keeps the drink from goin’ bad, I guess. But it also makes me wonder how long that stuff’s been sittin’ on the shelf. Makes you think dont it?
And then there’s this “citric acid.” Now, that sounds a little sour, don’t it? Like a lemon or somethin’. Maybe that’s what gives it that little tang. I don’t rightly know, maybe it cuts all that sweetness, makes it easier to swallow down. They add some other sweetener too “sodium saccharin” tastes just like sugar but not really sugar, how they do that I can’t say.
So, there you have it. That’s what I reckon is in A&W root beer. Bubbly water, lots of sugar, some color, some flavorin’s, some stuff to keep it fresh, and a little somethin’ sour. I don’t know if it’s good for ya or not, but them young’uns sure do seem to like it. Me, I’ll stick to my iced tea. At least I know what’s in that.
But listen to me rambling on! At the end of the day its just soda pop, not gonna kill ya to have some now and again. Just dont drink too much, thats what I say. Everything in moderation right?
