Okay, so I’ve been wanting to try out some dutch oven cooking while camping for ages. Finally got around to it this past weekend, and let me tell you, it was a game changer. I mean, cooking over a campfire is cool and all, but the dutch oven takes it to a whole new level. Here’s how it all went down.
Prepping for the Cookout
First off, I made sure I had all my gear. Got my trusty dutch oven, a good pair of heat-resistant gloves, a lid lifter, and a small shovel for the coals. I decided to keep it simple for my first try and go with a classic beef stew. So I prepped all the ingredients at home – chopped up some beef, carrots, potatoes, onions, you know, the usual stew stuff. Packed everything in separate ziplock bags. Don’t forget the seasoning! Salt, pepper, some herbs – packed those too.

Getting the Campfire Ready
Once we got to the campsite and set up the tent, it was time to get the fire going. I let it burn down for a good while until I had a nice bed of hot coals. This is key for dutch oven cooking – you want even heat, not raging flames. I used the shovel to move some of the coals to the side, creating a little cooking area.
Cooking the Stew
Now for the fun part! I placed the dutch oven on the coals, added a bit of oil, and tossed in the beef to brown it. The smell of that sizzling meat… oh man, it was already amazing. Once the beef was browned, I threw in the onions, let them soften a bit, and then added all the other veggies. Poured in some water, just enough to cover everything, sprinkled in my seasonings, put the lid on, and then… we wait.
I shoveled some coals on top of the lid to get that even heat all around. This is where the lid lifter comes in handy, ’cause that thing gets hot! Every 30 minutes or so, I’d carefully lift the lid, give it a stir, and check the heat. It ended up taking like two hours for the stew to be done. Plenty of time to chill out and enjoy the beautiful scenery, while the smell of our stew filled the air.
The Results
Let me tell you, that stew was incredible. Seriously, the best stew I’ve ever had, hands down. The meat was super tender, the veggies were cooked perfectly, and the flavors were just… wow. It was so satisfying to eat a hot, hearty meal in the middle of the wilderness.
- Tip 1: Patience is key. Dutch oven cooking takes time, but it’s worth it.
- Tip 2: Don’t forget those heat-resistant gloves. Safety first!
- Tip 3: Experiment with recipes! Stew is a great starting point, but you can cook anything in a dutch oven. I have my eye on making a cobbler next time.
So yeah, that was my dutch oven camping adventure. I’m officially hooked. If you’re into camping and good food, you gotta give it a try. It’s a bit of work, but trust me, the results are totally worth it. I will make some bread next time for sure!
