This year, my grandkids say they gonna have a “Friendsgiving”. Sounds fancy, huh? They all bring some food, they say. Like a potluck, but with your buddies. And they asked me for some friendsgiving desserts. Bless their hearts, they think I know all the new-fangled words! But dessert? That I know. I’ve been making sweet things for longer than they been alive.
So, they want somethin’ special, they say. Not just any old pie. Though my apple pie is the best, if I do say so myself. They want somethin’ different. Something their friends will all like. Well, when you feed a crowd, you gotta have choices, that’s what I always say. You can’t please everyone with just one thing. My daughter, she always loved chocolate. My son, he was always partial to anything with fruit.

First thing that popped into my head? Those jello cubes. Colorful like a rainbow. Kids love them jello cubes. All them colors stacked up. They look real pretty on the table, too. Easy to make, Lord knows. Just layer up different colors of jello. That’s one thing that is easy for friendsgiving desserts. That’s for sure.
- Red jello
- Blue jello
- Green jello
- Yellow jello
Just layer them up real good. Easy to eat, too. Just grab a cube and pop it in your mouth.
Then, there’s those cookies. They call ’em “Everything Cookies”. ‘Cause you put everything but the kitchen sink in ’em, I reckon. Cereal, pretzels, them little toffee bits. Crunchy, sweet, salty. All mixed up together. I don’t see how anyone could not like those. There’s gotta be somethin’ in there for everyone. Even got them pretzels, I used to eat them all the time!
And them apple pie bites. Oh, my stars. My grandma used to make apple pie. Best pie in the county. These little bites, they ain’t quite the same. But they still got that good apple taste. And you can drizzle ’em with that caramel stuff. Makes ’em real fancy. These are real good for when it starts gettin’ cold out. Apple pie just makes you feel all warm inside, don’t it?
My grandkids also mentioned these s’mores bars. I know what s’mores are, of course. We used to make them when we were younger! You know, roasting marshmallows over the fire. These bars, though, they’re different. All chocolate and marshmallow, all baked together. They say they’re real popular. I guess the young folks like ’em. Sounds kinda messy to me, but what do I know?
And you gotta have some cheese and crackers, of course. Maybe a few different kinds. That’s a good thing to nibble on. Even when you got all them sweets. Sometimes you need something salty. Fruit, too. Grapes, apples, maybe some berries. Whatever’s in season. That way they have some healthy friendsgiving desserts. Olives, too. Some folks like them. My oldest boy, he could eat a whole jar of olives in one sitting.
Then you gotta think about how you gonna set it all up. You can’t just throw it all on the table any old way. Gotta make it look nice. They say it is very important for friendsgiving desserts. You can put all them desserts on different plates. Different heights, maybe. Make it look real fancy. Like they do in them magazines. You know, them ones they used to have at the beauty parlor. My old eyes ain’t what they used to be, but I can still arrange a pretty table.

And you gotta have enough for everyone. That’s the most important thing. Can’t have folks goin’ hungry. Especially not at a party. Two or three or maybe four little things for each person, I reckon. That should be enough. If not, well, there’s always more cookies in the jar. Those cookies don’t last very long, you know. One minute they’re there, next minute they’re gone. Just like magic.
So, that’s what I’m thinkin’ for these friendsgiving desserts. A little bit of this, a little bit of that. Somethin’ for everyone. Just like a good ol’ fashioned potluck. Except with your friends, I guess. Times change, but some things stay the same. Good food, good company. That’s what matters. And plenty of desserts, of course. Can’t have a party without dessert!
I am sure they will love my desserts. Hope they will have a good time, these kids.
