Okay, so, today I want to talk about this “Elf on the Shelf” thing. I saw it all over the internet and thought, “What the heck is that?” So I did some digging. Apparently, it’s this Christmas tradition where you have this little elf doll that you move around the house every night. The idea is that the elf is watching the kids and reporting back to Santa about whether they’re being naughty or nice. Sounds kinda creepy, but also kinda fun, right?
So, I decided to try it out. I went online, ordered an elf. When it arrived, my first thought was, “This thing is smaller than I expected.” But, whatever, let’s do this.

I waited until the kids were asleep, then I grabbed the elf and headed to the kitchen. I was going to start easy. I placed the elf on top of the fridge, easy peasy. That was day one.
The next morning, the kids spotted it right away! They were super excited. “Mommy, the elf moved!” they yelled. That was it, I was hooked. I had to keep this going.
- Day 2: I put the elf inside the cereal box. The kids found it when they were getting breakfast.
- Day 3: I tied a little string to the elf and hung it from a cabinet door. That was a bit more tricky to set up, but it was worth it.
- Day 4: This one was my favorite. I took some flour and made it look like the elf had been making snow angels on the counter. The kids thought it was hilarious!
It’s actually become a really fun thing for us. Every morning the kids wake up and the first thing they do is run to the kitchen to see where the elf is. It’s like a little game we play. I started sharing our little adventure with some friends, and they were having just as much fun watching as we were playing.
A Few Things I Learned
Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way:
- Start simple: You don’t have to go crazy with elaborate setups. Just moving the elf to a new spot each day is enough.
- Get the kids involved: They can help you come up with ideas for where to put the elf.
- Have fun: This is supposed to be a fun tradition, so don’t stress out about it. Just enjoy the moment and the laughter.
So yeah, that’s my experience with Elf on the Shelf in the kitchen. It’s been a lot of fun, and it’s definitely something I think we’ll keep doing every Christmas. If you’re looking for a fun way to add some magic to the holiday season, I definitely recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared to get creative, and maybe have a few late nights setting it all up. You never know, you might just enjoy it as much as the kids do. Trust me, it’s worth it!
