Okay, so the other day, I decided to try out some dutch oven dessert recipes for camping. I’ve always loved the idea of baking in the great outdoors, and I figured a dutch oven would be the perfect way to do it. So I started with a bit of research. I wanted something fairly easy, because, hey, I’m camping, not competing on a baking show!
Getting Ready
First things first, I made sure my dutch oven was seasoned and ready to go. It’s an old one I inherited, so I gave it a good scrub and a light coat of oil. Then I started thinking about what recipe to try. I decided on something with fruit. Because it’s nice to cook something in the forest with fruits.

Experimenting with Some Recipes
- Peach Cobbler:I did a super simple peach cobbler. I just tossed some sliced peaches (canned, because, again, camping!) with a bit of sugar and cinnamon.
- Cake Mix:For the topping, I used a box of yellow cake mix. I have some in my home, so I take them with me! I sprinkled it over the peaches, then dotted it with butter. The instructions online suggested using about half a stick, but I just eyeballed it.
Into the Fire
Now for the fun part: the coals. I used charcoal briquettes because they give a nice, even heat. I put some under the dutch oven and some on top, just like the recipes said. It’s kinda tricky to get the temperature right, but I figured somewhere around 350 degrees Fahrenheit would be good.
Patience and the Sweet Smell of Success
Then came the waiting. It took longer than I expected, probably around 45 minutes to an hour. I kept peeking (which I know you’re not supposed to do, but I couldn’t help it!) and eventually, it started to smell amazing. The top was all golden brown and bubbly.
I carefully took it off the coals and let it cool for a bit. Oh man, was it good! Warm, gooey, and peachy. It was the perfect ending to a day of hiking and fresh air. Seriously, there’s something special about eating a warm dessert you cooked over a fire.
My First Attempt
It was the best to cook with fruit in the forest! So I try the Cherry-Chocolate Lava Cakes next time, sounds a little more challenging, but hey, that’s part of the fun, right?
