Alright, so today I wanted to share a little project I’ve been tinkering with – making my own commercial beverage dispenser. You know, those things you see at fast-food joints or convenience stores that magically pour out your favorite soda or juice? Yeah, those. I always thought they were pretty cool, and I figured, why not try to make one myself? It sounded like a fun challenge, and I love a good DIY project.
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to get a handle on how these things actually work. From what I gathered, most of these dispensers use a pump to push the liquid up and out. There’s a clear tube that runs up the middle of the dispenser, and when you push the lever, a pump starts circulating the liquid up to the top, and then it flows out into your cup. Simple enough, right?
Gathering Supplies
Next up, I started thinking about what kind of materials I’d need. I obviously needed some kind of container to hold the liquid. After browsing, I ordered a few different sized containers online, just to see what would work best. I also got some clear tubing, similar to what I saw in the pictures of real dispensers. And, of course, I needed a pump. I found a small, food-grade pump online that seemed like it would do the trick.
The Build
Once I had all my materials, it was time to start putting this thing together. I started by attaching the pump to the bottom of the container. This was a bit tricky, as I had to make sure it was properly sealed so there wouldn’t be any leaks. I used some food-safe sealant to make sure everything was secure.
Then, I connected the tubing to the pump and ran it up through the center of the container. I had to drill a small hole in the lid of the container for the tubing to come out of. Again, making sure everything was sealed properly was key here.
Testing It Out
With everything assembled, it was time for the moment of truth – the test run. I filled the container with some water, plugged in the pump, and pushed the makeshift lever I had fashioned. And guess what? It actually worked! Water started flowing up the tube and out into my cup. I was pretty stoked, to be honest. It wasn’t perfect, but for a first attempt, I was pretty happy with it.
Refinements
Of course, no project is ever truly finished, right? There are a few things I still want to improve on. The flow rate is a bit slow, so I might need to look into a more powerful pump. And the lever mechanism is pretty janky, so I’d like to come up with something a bit more refined. But overall, this was a super fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. It’s pretty cool to think that I can now make my own drinks from scratch and serve them from a machine that I built.
