Unboxing and First Impressions
Okay, so the delivery guy practically throws this honkin’ big box on my porch. Had to shove everything else in the garage just to make room. Ripped the tape off, dug through mountains of styrofoam peanuts – those things get everywhere, hate it – and finally pulled out the Permasteel 80-quart beast. Thing looks solid, gotta give it that. Heavy metal shell, felt like moving a bank vault.
Getting It in Place
Rolled it inside on the built-in casters, sounds easy right? Wrong. Nearly took out my toe dragging it over the door threshold. Found a spot near the back patio door, close to an outlet. Figured that would work for parties and stuff. Plugged it in, heard the compressor kick on with this low hum. So far, so good. Gave it a quick wipe down inside with just water and a cloth – smelled a bit plasticy at first.

The Pre-Chill Struggle
Before loading it up, you gotta get it cold. Manual says give it at least 24 hours to chill down properly. Cranked the thermostat dial down as far as it would go. Checked back later… feels cold, but is it cold enough? Stuck my trusty standalone thermometer inside. Temperature seemed to hover around 38F, not terrible. My impatience got the better of me though. Decided to start loading some sodas and water bottles that were already fridge-cold. Shoved them onto the shelves.
Stuffing It Full & Power Draw Worries
Here’s where things got real. Filled it up slowly over the next few days. Added a couple cases of beer, sports drinks, juice boxes for the kids. Wanted to see what this “80-quart” thing actually meant in real life. How much fits?
- Canned drinks stack like a dream.
- Big one-liter bottles? Not so much. They kept rolling around.
- Big plastic gallon jugs? You gotta lay ’em sideways, top shelf only.
Also got kinda paranoid about my electric bill. Kept touching the sides – they get pretty warm when it’s running hard after you add warm stuff. Made me nervous.
Finding Its Groove and Minor Annoyances
After like three days of constantly opening the lid and adding stuff, the temperature finally stabilized nice and solid at 36F. Drinks were icy cold! But noticed a couple things:
- Condensation pools a little around the base if you leave it closed for a while. Gotta wipe that up sometimes.
- The lid latch? It works fine, feels secure. But sometimes when you’re in a hurry and just slam it shut, it makes this awful plastic-on-metal crack sound. Makes you cringe.
Overall Verdict After a Month
So, it works. Really well, actually. Holds a mountain of drinks, keeps ’em super cold, seems built like a tank. Was it perfect? Nah. The initial temperature drop felt slow, and getting gallons to sit properly is a bit awkward. Worried about the electric bill spiking when it’s blazing hot outside. But honestly? It just keeps chugging along. Opens easy, drains easy if you ever need to empty it. Got it absolutely packed right now for summer – cold drinks anytime, no digging in the kitchen fridge. Happy I got it, even with the little quirks.
