Okay, so I’ve been trying to recreate some of my favorite store-bought salad dressings at home. You know, to save a bit of money and, honestly, just to see if I could. Today, it was all about Kraft Thousand Island. I’ve always liked that tangy, creamy goodness, so I figured, why not give it a shot?
Getting Started: Gathering My Ingredients
First things first, I needed to figure out what actually goes into this stuff. I looked at the Kraft bottle, I looked at copycat recipes, I am pretty sure I have found the right ingredients. This is what I ended up using:

- Mayonnaise: This is the base, obviously. I used about a cup of regular, full-fat mayo.
- Ketchup: I went with around 1/3 cup. Seems like a good balance.
- Sweet Pickle Relish:A must-have, and used about 1/4 cup.
- White Vinegar:A small splash is enough, and I used about 1 tablespoon.
- Sugar:The orginial one is a little bit sweet, so used about 1 tablespoon.
- Onion Powder:Used 1/2 teaspoon for flavour.
- Garlic Powder:Same as onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon.
- Salt & Pepper:Just a pinch of each, to taste.
Mixing It All Up
I grabbed a medium-sized bowl and started dumping stuff in. I started with the mayo, then the ketchup and sweet pickle relish. I mixed it well until everything is well combined.
Next, add the white vinegar and sugar, give it to another good mix.
Finally, I sprinkled in the onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. I stirred it all together, making sure everything was evenly distributed. It looked pretty close to the real deal at this point!
The Taste Test
I grabbed a small spoon and gave it a taste. Not bad! It was definitely in the Thousand Island family. I decided my first batch for today is a success!
I’m storing it in a jar in the fridge. I figure it’ll be good for at least a week, maybe longer. Homemade dressing for the win!
