Alright, so I gotta share this thing I’ve been messing around with lately – a DIY kitchen odor absorber. Seriously, my kitchen sometimes smells like a weird combo of last night’s stir-fry and this morning’s burnt toast. Not ideal, right?
So, first thing’s first, I started Googling like crazy. I mean, who wants to spend a fortune on fancy air fresheners that barely work? That’s when I stumbled upon the baking soda trick. Seemed simple enough, and I already had a huge box of it sitting in my pantry.

Here’s what I did:
- Grabbed a few small mason jars. You know, the kind you use for jam or pickles. I think I had like, three lying around.
- Scooped about half a cup of baking soda into each jar. Didn’t measure exactly, just eyeballed it.
- Now, this part was a bit tricky. I needed to make holes in the lids so the baking soda could actually, you know, absorb the smells. I didn’t have a drill handy, so I grabbed a hammer and a nail. Carefully hammered a bunch of small holes into each lid. Note to self: maybe invest in a drill.
- Screwed the lids back on the jars.
- Placed these little odor-absorbing bad boys around the kitchen. One went near the stove, another near the trash can, and the last one on the counter.
At first, I wasn’t sure if it was actually doing anything. But after a few days, I noticed the kitchen just smelled…fresher. Less “stinky food graveyard,” more “neutral space.”
To be honest, it’s not a miracle cure. It doesn’t completely eliminate strong odors instantly. But it definitely helps keep things under control, especially with those lingering cooking smells.
I also read online that you can add a few drops of essential oil to the baking soda for a little extra scent. I tried it with some lavender oil I had. It was nice, but honestly, I kinda prefer the neutral smell. Maybe I’ll experiment with different oils later.
What I learned:
- Baking soda is cheap and effective.
- Hammering holes in jar lids is not my forte.
- Patience is key. It takes a few days to notice the difference.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with this little DIY project. It’s a simple and affordable way to keep my kitchen smelling decent. Give it a try, you might be surprised!
And hey, if you have any other kitchen odor-busting tips, let me know!
