Okay, so today I decided to mess around with making some “Patriot Beverages.” I’ve seen some cool red, white, and blue drinks online, and I thought, “Why not give it a shot?”
First, I gathered all my ingredients. This was probably the most important part, because you need drinks that won’t all mix together and turn into a murky mess. I remembered something about density from, like, middle school science, so I figured that would be key.

- Cranberry juice (or any red juice, really)
- Blue Gatorade (or Powerade, whatever you can find)
- A clear-ish, low-sugar drink (I used some diet 7-up.)
The Experiment Begins
I grabbed a tall, clear glass. It’s important to use a clear one so you can see the layers. First, I poured in the cranberry juice. I filled it about a third of the way up. Easy peasy.
Next, the tricky part. I knew I had to pour the next layer really slowly to keep them from mixing. I took a spoon and held it against the inside of the glass, just above the cranberry juice. Then, I very, very slowly poured the 7-up over the back of the spoon. It kind of spread out and floated on top of the red layer. It worked!
Finally, the blue layer. I used the same spoon trick, pouring the Gatorade super slowly over the 7-up layer. I watched carefully, making sure it didn’t just sink straight through. And…success! I had a red, white, and blue layered drink.
Important Things I found
Pouring slowly is super important!.And make sure your drinks are cold. I think it helps keep them separate.
It took me a bit of trial. My first attempt…well, it wasn’t pretty. Everything just kind of blended together. But after a couple of tries, I figured out the slow-pouring thing, and it was totally worth it. Pretty cool, right?
