Okay, so yesterday I was craving something cheesy and colorful, and what popped into my head? Rainbow Goldfish crackers! I figured, why not try making these myself? I mean, how hard could it be? I found some stuff online about what goes into them, like plant-based colors and the usual flour, cheese, and all that.
First, I went and gathered all the ingredients. The main things were enriched wheat flour, cheddar cheese, and some basic stuff like salt. Then for the colors, I read that they use plant-based stuff, so I grabbed some natural food coloring from my pantry. I had some beet juice for red, turmeric for yellow, and spinach for green – seemed easy enough.

I started by mixing the flour with some spices for flavor and, of course, a good amount of cheddar cheese. I just mixed all the dry ingredients first. You know, your basic flour, a load of cheddar cheese, some salt, and a bit of other spices to make it taste like something.

- Cheddar Cheese
- Salt

I kneaded everything together, adding water little by little until it felt like dough. I split the dough into a few parts, this is where the magic happens, right? I added the natural food colorings to each part. It was kind of messy, but hey, that’s part of the fun. I kneaded each part until the color was all mixed in.
- Red from Beet Juice
- Yellow from Turmeric
- Green from Spinach
Then, I rolled out each colored dough really thin. Now, I didn’t have a fish-shaped cutter, so I just used a knife and cut them into little squares. I mean, they’re not exactly fish-shaped, but close enough, right? I placed them on a baking sheet, making sure they weren’t touching each other.
Finally, I baked them for about 10-15 minutes, until they were crispy and golden. They smelled pretty good, I gotta say. When they were done, I took them out of the oven and let them cool. It took all my willpower not to eat them all right away! Once they cooled down, I finally got to try them. They weren’t exactly like the store-bought ones, but they were crispy, cheesy, and had a nice homemade touch. Plus, they were colorful! The red ones were my favorite, I think the beet juice gave them a nice earthy flavor.
Homemade Attempt Result
They weren’t perfect, but they were mine. And honestly, it was a pretty fun experiment. I think next time I’ll try to find a fish-shaped cutter. Or maybe I’ll just stick to buying them, who knows?
