So, I was sitting around the other day, you know, just chilling, and suddenly this idea popped into my head: a crossword puzzle, but specifically about Japanese noodles. Yeah, random, I know. But I’m a big fan of ramen, udon, soba, the whole lot, and I figured, why not combine my love for noodles with a bit of a brain teaser? Seemed like a fun little project to keep myself busy.
Getting Started – The Noodle Brain Dump
First things first, I needed a list of words. This was actually the fun part. I just grabbed a notebook and started jotting down every Japanese noodle type and related term I could think of. Ramen, obviously. Then Udon, Soba, Somen. I even threw in Shirataki for the health-conscious folks, ha! Then came the broths and toppings: Miso, Shoyu, Tonkotsu, Dashi. And don’t forget Tempura, Nori, and those little fish cakes, Narutomaki. My list got pretty long, pretty quick. I was like, “Okay, this is a good start.”

The Grid – A Tangled Mess at First
Next up was actually trying to make these words fit together. This, my friends, was where the real “fun” began. I tried drawing a grid by hand at first. Big mistake. It looked like a bowl of noodles that had exploded. Words were crashing into each other, letters didn’t line up. It was a disaster. I almost gave up, thinking maybe this was a dumber idea than I initially thought.
I spent a good hour just erasing and redrawing. I realized I had to be a bit more strategic. I started looking for longer words that could be anchors. Tonkotsu was a good one. And Shirataki. I tried to place those first and then work the smaller words around them. It was like a really frustrating game of Tetris, but with letters.
Clueing In – Making it Make Sense (Sort Of)
Once I had a semi-decent grid that actually looked like a crossword, it was time for the clues. This part I thought would be easy, but making good clues is harder than it looks! I didn’t want them to be too obvious, but also not so obscure that nobody could get them. For “Ramen,” I couldn’t just say “a type of Japanese noodle,” right? That’s boring.
So, I tried to get a little creative. For example:
- For Udon: “Thick wheat flour noodle, often in a hot soup.”
- For Soba: “Buckwheat noodles, can be served hot or cold.”
- For Miso: “Fermented soybean paste, a popular ramen broth base.”
I even tried to throw in a few trickier ones for words like Tsuyu (the dipping sauce for cold soba/udon) or Kake (referring to basic hot noodle soup). I read them out loud to myself, trying to imagine if they made sense or if I just sounded like I was talking noodle gibberish. My dog just looked at me funny, so that wasn’t much help.
The “Final” Product and Testing
After a lot of tweaking, scribbling, and muttering to myself, I had something that resembled a proper crossword puzzle. It wasn’t perfect, mind you. Some of the word placements were a bit clunky, and I’m sure a professional crossword maker would probably laugh. But hey, it was my noodle crossword.
I then gave it to my partner to try. That was the real test. There was some confused frowning, a few “huh?” moments, but eventually, they managed to fill most of it out! They did point out one clue that was apparently “impossible,” so I had to go back and reword that one. Feedback is important, even if it bruises your ego a little bit, haha.

So yeah, that was my little adventure into the world of Japanese noodle crossword creation. It was definitely more work than I expected for such a simple idea. But it was a good way to spend an afternoon, and I actually learned a bit more about Japanese noodles myself. Plus, now I have a custom crossword if I ever get bored again. Maybe next time I’ll do one on Japanese pickles. Or maybe not.
