Okay, so it’s Veterans Day, and I wanted to do something special. I thought, why not bake some themed desserts? Seemed like a cool idea at the time. I had a vision of red, white, and blue everything. I started searching for recipes online, and man, there are a lot of them. Cupcakes, cookies, pies… you name it.
I decided to make some cupcakes and some sugar cookies. I gathered all the ingredients: flour, sugar, eggs, butter, you know, the usual stuff. Oh, and food coloring, gotta get that red, white, and blue vibe going.

First off, the cupcakes. I whipped up a simple vanilla batter, divided it into three parts, and got to coloring. Red was easy, blue was fine, but the white… well, it just stayed white. No surprises there, huh? I used a basic buttercream frosting recipe and did the same thing—colored it red, white, and blue. I’m not gonna lie, the red food coloring got a bit out of control, and my hands looked like I’d committed a crime, but whatever. I baked the cupcakes, let them cool down, and then started frosting. They looked kinda patriotic, I guess.
Making Sugar Cookies
Next up, sugar cookies. I found a recipe that seemed easy enough. Mixed the dough, chilled it for a bit, then rolled it out. I didn’t have any star-shaped cookie cutters, but I did find a circle one. I was thinking, maybe I can make the circles look like flags? I cut out a bunch of circles and got them in the oven.
Once they were baked and cooled, I started decorating. I made a simple royal icing and, once again, split it into three bowls for coloring. The red and blue were vibrant, that’s for sure. I tried to get creative with the designs. Some were stripes, some were stars that I attempted to draw freehand, some were just blobs of color. They were… interesting.

- Chilled the dough.
- Rolled out the dough and used a circle cutter.

In the end, the desserts were edible, and that’s what counts, right? They didn’t look exactly like the pictures online, but hey, I tried. It was a fun little project, and it definitely made Veterans Day a bit more colorful. Plus, my family got to eat a bunch of sweets, so everyone was happy. It was a good day, and I think I’ll try it again next year, maybe with a bit more practice.
