Okay, so I’ve been messing around with making drinks thicker, and let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a journey. I wanted to share what I’ve learned so far, ’cause it’s kinda cool.
Getting Started
First, I figured out why I even needed thicker drinks. It’s not just for fun, some folks actually need them, like, if they have trouble swallowing. So, that was my motivation.

Then, I dug around for some info on how to actually do it. I found a bunch of stuff online, some of it pretty confusing, to be honest. I stumbled across this stuff called “thickeners” – things you can add to drinks to make them, well, thicker.
Experiment Time!
I decided to try a few different thickeners. I grabbed some:
- Cornstarch: This is the classic, right? Everyone’s got some in their pantry.
- Xanthan gum: Sounded kinda fancy, found it at the grocery store.
- Pre-made thickener packets: These were specifically for drinks, so I was curious.
I started with plain old water, just to get a feel for it. I followed the instructions on each thickener, which was a good starting point. I quickly learned that a little goes a long way! Seriously, I messed up a few times by adding too much and ending up with, like, water pudding.
The cornstarch needed to be heated, which was a bit of a pain. I mixed it with cold water first, then heated it up on the stove, stirring like crazy until it got thicker. The xanthan gum was easier – I just sprinkled it in and whisked. The pre-made packets were the simplest, just rip and pour.
Testing and Tasting
I did some testing using different tools,I tested using different spoons and cups.
I tested it using a straw and also without it, to get a good feel of the differences.

Once I got the hang of the water, I moved on to other drinks. I tried juice, milk, even some soup broth. It was pretty cool to see how the different thickeners worked with different liquids. Some mixed better than others, and some definitely tasted better.
My Takeaways
Here’s what I’ve figured out so far:
- Read the instructions carefully! Seriously, don’t be like me and just dump stuff in.
- Start small. You can always add more thickener, but you can’t take it out.
- Different thickeners work differently. Some are better for hot drinks, some for cold.
- Taste matters! Some thickeners can change the flavor of your drink.
It’s been a fun little experiment, and I’m still learning. I’m planning to try some other thickeners, like guar gum, and maybe even get into making some actual recipes. I’ll keep you posted!
