Well now, if we’re talkin’ about candies from the 1950s, you best believe there were some real special treats folks adored back then. Life was simpler, so these little sweet treats brought a whole lotta joy to kids and grown-ups alike. Let me tell ya, there’s a whole mess of candies that folks remember fondly, and some are still around today!

Top 1950s Candy: Iconic Treats That Defined a Generation

Marshmallow Peeps came about in 1953, and they were just the sweetest little chicks made of marshmallow. Now, you might think marshmallows come in all kinds of shapes now, but back in the 50s, them Peeps were somethin’ fresh and new! Folks loved ’em around Easter time especially, with their soft, squishy insides and sugar-coated outsides. Nothing says the 50s like a Peep!

Another candy worth talkin’ about is Pixy Stix. Now, imagine sugar powder in a paper straw, and that’s a Pixy Stix! Kids would rip these open and dump that sugar right on their tongue, just like it was somethin’ normal to do! They came in all kinds of fruity flavors and had kids runnin’ wild, just lovin’ that sugary rush.

Now, here’s one ya might remember: Satellite Wafers. They looked like little flying saucers, and they had candy beads inside ’em. Folks loved these because they looked kinda like what you’d see on TV with all that space stuff startin’ to show up back then. Kids loved that crunchy outside and the little candy surprise inside.

And let’s not forget the Hot Tamales, which were spicy little chewy candies. These weren’t your usual sweet treat – they had a bit of a kick! Made with cinnamon, these candies sure added some flavor to the candy scene back in the day.

We also had good ol’ M&M’s, now don’t you forget. They’d been around since the 1940s, but in the 50s, M&M’s got a peanut-filled version that folks just went crazy for! One of the best things about M&M’s was that they didn’t melt in your hand – a real plus when ya didn’t want sticky fingers!

Tootsie Rolls were also a classic candy that had been around even longer, but they were still loved just as much in the 1950s. They had that chocolatey chewiness that folks could just keep gnawing on, and they were affordable, so even if ya didn’t have much, ya could still get yourself a treat.

Then ya had your Licorice Root and Aniseed Balls, which were popular even though they might sound a bit old-fashioned today. Licorice Root was actually a little piece of the root ya could chew on, and Aniseed Balls were hard little candies with a strong flavor. They weren’t too sweet, but folks liked ‘em for somethin’ different.

And don’t let me forget Ribbon Candy and Candy Canes, which were more of a holiday thing but still popular. Ribbon Candy looked real fancy and was usually found around Christmastime, along with Candy Canes. They were simple treats, but they were just part of what made the holidays feel special.

Dolly Mixtures were also a big hit, especially over in England, but they were loved in the States too. They were a mix of all sorts of little candies – chewy ones, sugary ones, ya name it. Kids loved getting a handful of Dolly Mixtures just for the variety!

Of course, ya had your usual gum and taffy too. Bubble Gum was a big deal, especially with brands like Bazooka Joe, which came with little comics in the wrapper. And taffy was always a classic – stretchy, chewy, and usually in fun flavors like banana or vanilla.
