Okay, so, I’ve been on this kick lately where I’m trying to broaden my horizons, you know? Not just with food, but with drinks, too. And since I’m cutting back on the booze, I thought, why not explore some non-alcoholic Mexican beverages? I love Mexican food, so the drinks gotta be good, right?
So, first up, I decided to tackle Horchata. I’d heard about it before – something about it being creamy and sweet. I’m not usually a fan of sweet drinks, but I thought I would give it a shot. I found a recipe online, which was really just rice, water, cinnamon, and sugar. I soaked the rice and cinnamon sticks overnight like the instructions said.

- Soak rice and cinnamon sticks
- Blend with water and sugar
- Strain
- Chill and serve
The next day, I threw everything in my blender, gave it a good whirl, and then strained it through a cheesecloth. Honestly, it was kind of a pain to strain, but I got it done. It was not so creamy or thick like yogurt, but more like a watered-down milk. Tasted it… and wow! It was surprisingly refreshing! Not too sweet, with a nice hint of cinnamon.
Next on my list were Agua Frescas. I found all sorts of flavors in the stores. I tried the cucumber one, it was pretty good! I went to try the watermelon one, not so much. I had to taste the mango one, it was delicious!
I was feeling adventurous, so I thought, “Why not try making one of these Agua Frescas myself?” I had some cucumbers, ginger, and mint lying around, so I decided to go for a Cucumber Ginger Mint Agua Fresca. Same idea as the Horchata – blend everything together and strain. This one was even easier, actually. And let me tell you, this was a winner! Super refreshing, especially on a hot day. It was like a spa in a glass. The cucumber was cool, the ginger gave it a little kick, and the mint made it super fresh.
My Findings
Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by the world of non-alcoholic Mexican drinks. Horchata is definitely something I’ll make again, and I’m excited to try other Agua Fresca flavors. It’s a whole new world of beverages out there, and I’m here for it. Who needs alcohol when you have all these delicious and refreshing options? Plus, they’re way better for you! I will keep exploring and sharing my experience with you guys!
