Trying Out Bird Dog Stuff
So, I kept seeing this Bird Dog whiskey around. Different flavors, mostly. Peach, blackberry, stuff like that. Curiosity got the better of me one afternoon, you know how it is. Was at the store anyway, figured why not grab a bottle.
Went for the Blackberry one first. Seemed like a popular choice, or at least the one they had the most of on the shelf. Got it home, didn’t wait for any special occasion. Just wanted to see what the fuss was about.

First Impressions
Cracked it open. The smell hits you right away. Definitely blackberry, very strong. Almost like candy, really sweet smelling. Poured a bit into a glass, just neat. No ice, no nothing. Wanted the straight experience first.
Took a sip. Whoa. Okay, it’s sweet. Very sweet. The blackberry flavor is right there, front and center. You get a bit of that whiskey warmth underneath, but the fruit flavor dominates. It’s not subtle, that’s for sure. Honestly, it wasn’t bad, just… different. Not really what I’d call a traditional whiskey experience.
Mixing It Up
Drank that first glass neat. Then thought, okay, this feels like something you’d mix. It’s got that strong flavor profile. So, I tried a couple things:
- With Lemonade: Poured some into a glass with ice, topped it with lemonade. Stirred it up. This worked way better for me. The lemonade cut through some of the sweetness, made it more refreshing. Pretty decent summer drink, actually. Simple.
- With Ginger Ale: Tried the same thing but with ginger ale. Also not bad. The ginger added a little spice which played okay with the blackberry. Still sweet, but balanced a bit better than neat.
Didn’t get too fancy with it. Just wanted to see how it held up in simple mixes. Seems like that’s where it shines more, at least for my taste.
Final Thoughts

Look, it is what it is. It’s a flavored whiskey. If you go in expecting some complex, aged bourbon, you’ll be disappointed. But if you know it’s a sweet, flavor-forward drink, it’s fine. The blackberry one I tried was intense on the flavor. Probably good for people who don’t love the taste of straight whiskey or want something easy to mix for a party or a casual drink.
Would I buy it again? Maybe. If I wanted something specifically for mixing a sweet, fruity drink, yeah, possibly. It served its purpose for that. But for sipping neat, it’s not really my thing. Just a straightforward record of trying it out, nothing more, nothing less.
