My Fridge Clean-Out Adventure
Alright, let’s talk about what happened in my kitchen yesterday. I opened the fridge, you know, looking for something, anything. And what I saw was… well, a collection of bits and pieces. Stuff from meals earlier in the week. We all know that sight.
The Leftover Lineup:

- A small container of cooked rice, maybe a cup left.
- Half a roast chicken breast, looking a bit dry.
- Some steamed broccoli florets, slightly yellowing.
- One lonely carrot rolling around in the crisper drawer.
- About a quarter of an onion.
- A dollop of leftover gravy from Sunday dinner.
Honestly, throwing it out felt wrong. Waste not, want not, right? So, I figured, why not try and make something out of it? Something soupy, maybe? A watery dish, just to use it all up.
Getting Started
First thing, I grabbed everything out and put it on the counter. Looked like a weird puzzle. I decided to just chop everything up. The chicken got shredded pretty easily. The broccoli, I just chopped it smaller. Diced the carrot and that bit of onion. The rice was already, well, rice.
Then, I grabbed my trusty pot. Didn’t even bother sautéing the onion or carrot, just felt like getting it done. I literally just dumped everything into the pot. Yes, everything. The chicken, the veggies, the rice. Even scraped that bit of gravy in there for good measure. Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Making it Watery
Okay, now for the “watery” part. I poured in water. Probably added about 4 cups? Maybe 5? I wasn’t really measuring precisely, just wanted everything covered and soupy. Gave it a good stir. It looked… interesting. A real mix of colours and textures already.
Put the pot on the stove, turned the heat up high to get it boiling. Once it started bubbling nicely, I turned it down to a simmer. Popped a lid on, but left it slightly ajar. Let it just do its thing for maybe 20 minutes? Long enough for the carrot to soften up and for all the flavors to hopefully meld together.
Taste and Adjust
After simmering, I gave it a taste. Hmmm. It was definitely watery! And a bit bland. The gravy helped a bit, but it needed more. Added a good pinch of salt, some black pepper. Stirred, tasted again. Better. Still not amazing, but better. Added a splash of soy sauce I had lying around. That seemed to give it a little something extra.
The Final Product
So, what I ended up with was exactly what the title suggested: a watery dish made from many ingredients, mostly leftovers. It wasn’t going to win any cooking awards, that’s for sure. It looked like, well, boiled leftovers in broth. But you know what? It was warm, it used up all those bits that would have gone bad, and it was actually pretty edible. Filled a hole. Plus, my fridge looked much tidier afterwards. Mission accomplished, I guess!
