Too hard water messes with the taste, but this water helps the other ingredients really shine.

Grain (Malt): Then, we got the grain, or what the fancy folks call malt. They use mostly pale malts, and some caramel malts, too, to give the beer that nice balance. The sugar from the grain is what helps the yeast do its work—turning that sugar into alcohol, just like bakin’ bread. Yeast: And last but not least, there’s yeast. You can’t make beer without yeast, no matter how much you might try! The yeast in Pilsner Urquell is a bottom-fermenting kind, and that means it ferments at the bottom of the barrel, slow and steady. It gives the beer a smooth, clean taste without too many fruity flavors that you might get from other kinds of yeast. The yeast works alongside the grain to make sure the beer’s got that perfect alcohol content, right around 4.4%—not too strong, not too weak.

Now, you might think, well, that’s all there is to it, but it ain’t that simple. The way they mix these four ingredients is important, too. You see, Pilsner Urquell is brewed with a special triple-decoction process, where the grain is mashed three times to bring out all the sweetness from the malt. It’s a time-consuming process, but it gives the beer that lovely caramel taste. And then, it’s all brewed with a bit of Czech tradition, making sure every batch is perfect.
