Okay, so, I had a hankering for some pumpkin pie the other day, but I didn’t want to make one from scratch. I mean, who has the time, right? So I popped over to Costco, because everyone raves about their pumpkin pies. I grabbed one, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! But it got me thinking, what’s actually in this thing that makes it so darn good?
First things first, I had to find out what goes into this delicious pie. I took a look at the ingredients list on the box. Naturally, the first ingredient is pumpkin. No surprises there! Then there’s sugar, water, and eggs. Pretty standard stuff for a pie, I guess.

Then it gets a bit more complicated. It’s got enriched wheat flour, and the label breaks that down into wheat flour, ferrous sulfate, niacin, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, and folic acid. Okay, a lot of scientific-sounding stuff, but I just nodded along like I knew what it all meant.
Next up, canola and/or soybean oil. Seems like they use one or the other, or maybe both? Then there’s nonfat milk and corn syrup, which I guess adds to the sweetness and texture.
Then the label says “contains 2% or less of the following:” and lists out a bunch of things like salt, spices, corn sugar, mono & diglycerides, and modified food starch. Honestly, I’m not a food scientist, so a lot of this is going over my head. But it still tasted good, so I wasn’t too worried.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what I found:
I did a little digging online, just to see what others were saying about it. Someone mentioned that it has a lot of fat and carbs, and some “processed ingredients” like canola oil, corn syrup, and those mono and diglycerides. But hey, it’s a pie! It’s not exactly health food, right?
Oh, and before I forget, I also found out that these pies usually cost between $8 and $10. Pretty good deal for a huge, tasty pie, if you ask me!
Anyway, I just wanted to share my little investigation into the Costco pumpkin pie. It’s a delicious mystery, full of ingredients I don’t fully understand, but hey, it makes my taste buds happy, and that’s all that really matters in the end, isn’t it?
