Okay, so I wanted to share something I’ve been trying out lately with my shrimp tanks. It’s about this Hikari Shrimp Cuisine food. I’d been using some generic flake stuff for a while, and honestly, it was making a bit of a mess. Lots of dust and uneaten bits floating around, you know?
So, I was poking around online and saw some people mentioning this specific Hikari food. Heard good things, especially about it not dirtying up the water as much. Decided, alright, let’s give it a go. Went to my local fish shop – thankfully they had it. Grabbed a small bag, didn’t want to commit to a huge one if the shrimp turned their noses up at it.

My Little Feeding Trial
Got it home, opened it up. First thing I noticed, the pellets are tiny. Like, really small, uniform little balls. Which seemed good, easier for the shrimp to handle, right? They didn’t have a super strong smell either, which I prefer.
So, feeding time came. I was careful, just dropped in a few pellets, maybe less than I would with the old food because I didn’t know how they’d react. Well, lemme tell you, they noticed it fast. Faster than usual. A bunch of them swarmed right over to the pellets. It was pretty cool to watch. They grabbed onto them and started munching away. Looked like they were actually eating it, not just picking at it and leaving half behind.
I kept an eye on the tank over the next day or so. The best part? Significantly less mess. The pellets seemed to hold their shape longer underwater, didn’t just dissolve into powder right away. This was a major plus for me. Checked the water parameters too – ammonia, nitrite, all looked normal. No cloudiness.
What I’ve Seen Since Then
I’ve been using this Hikari stuff pretty consistently for a few weeks now. Here’s what I’ve kinda gathered:
- The shrimp definitely seem to like it. They’re always eager when I drop it in.
- Activity levels seem good, maybe even a bit higher? Hard to say for sure, but they seem lively.
- Colors might be looking a bit better. Again, could just be me wanting to see it, but my cherry shrimp seem a bit more vibrant red.
- Less waste is the big win. The tank floor stays cleaner, meaning less siphoning out uneaten food.
- Water clarity seems to have improved slightly, likely because there’s less food breaking down in there.
Now, it’s not the cheapest shrimp food out there, gotta admit. The bag I got cost a bit more than my old bulk flakes. And because the pellets are so small and the shrimp like them, you have to be careful not to overfeed. It’s easy to put too much in because you think it doesn’t look like much.
But overall? Yeah, I’m sticking with it for now. The benefits of less mess and seeing the shrimp actively eat it seem worth the extra cost to me. It just makes managing the tank a little easier. So, that’s my experience with the Hikari Shrimp Cuisine. Just thought I’d put my two cents out there if anyone else was considering trying it.
