Alright, so the other day I was thinking about what to do for our next camping trip. We always do the same old hot dogs and burgers, which, don’t get me wrong, are great, but I wanted something sweet to finish things off. Dessert, you know? So I dug around, trying to find some good camping dessert ideas.
Trying Out Foil Packets
First thing I tried was those foil packet things. I grabbed some peaches, both fresh and canned ’cause I wanted to see if there was a difference. With the fresh ones, I sliced ’em in half and sprinkled some brown sugar and cinnamon inside. For the canned ones, I just dumped them in the foil and did the same with the sugar and spices. Wrapped them up tight and tossed them on the coals.

Man, these were simple! And they smelled amazing while they were cooking. The fresh peaches held their shape better, but honestly, the canned ones tasted just as good, maybe even a bit sweeter since they were already in syrup. Both were delicious though, especially with a dollop of whipped cream on top.
Pie Iron Experiments
Then I remembered my sister used to make these things called pie iron pies. So I got myself one of those pie irons. I buttered up some bread slices, just like she used to do. Then, following her lead, I peeled an apple, sliced it real thin, and put it on the bread with some sugar and cinnamon. Closed the iron and cooked it over the fire.
It was a bit tricky to get the hang of! The first one I burnt to a crisp, but I got better with practice. They were pretty tasty, kind of like a mini apple pie. I’m thinking of trying different fillings next time, maybe some berries or even chocolate.
Cookie Dough in the Freezer
Last thing I did was more of a prep thing than actual cooking at the campsite. I made a big batch of cookie dough. Chocolate chip, of course. I baked a few to make sure the recipe was good – quality control, you know? They were amazing if I do say so myself.
- Make cookie dough.
- Bake a few cookies for quality control.
- Roll the rest of the dough into logs and wrap them in plastic wrap.
- Freeze the dough logs.
This is going to be perfect for the trip! I can just slice off however many cookies we want and bake them in the pie iron or even on a hot rock. Fresh-baked cookies in the middle of nowhere? Yes, please! Now that I’ve done all this, I can’t wait to get out there and try these desserts for real. I just feel happy to share all these things with you guys and I might try some other things next time!
