Alright, alright, let’s talk about them sourdough dessert thingamajigs. You know, the kinda stuff you make when you got that there sourdough starter bubblin’ away and you don’t wanna waste it. I ain’t no fancy baker, mind you, but I can whip up somethin’ tasty. This ain’t gonna be no cookbook stuff, just plain talkin’ about how I make do.

First off, them sourdough blueberry muffins. Oh honey, they’re somethin’ else. You just take your regular muffin fixin’s, you know, flour, sugar, eggs, that kinda stuff. But then you dump in a good cup or so of that sourdough starter. Makes ’em all tangy and good. And don’t forget the blueberries! I like to use a whole heap of ’em, fresh if I got ’em, frozen if I don’t. Bake ’em up ’til they’re nice and golden brown. They come out so soft and fluffy, with them little bursts of blueberry goodness. Kids love ’em, grandkids love ’em, even that picky old man of mine gobbles ’em down.
Then there’s that sourdough banana bread. Now, that’s a good way to use up them overripe bananas sittin’ on the counter. You mash ’em up real good, then mix ’em with your sourdough starter, some flour, sugar, eggs, and a bit of cinnamon. I like to throw in some chopped nuts too, if I got ’em. Pecans or walnuts, whatever’s handy. Pour it all in a loaf pan and bake it ’til it’s done. You’ll know it’s ready when a toothpick stuck in the middle comes out clean. This bread is so moist and flavorful, perfect for breakfast or a snack. And it makes the whole house smell amazing.
And let’s not forget them sourdough chocolate zucchini muffins. I know, I know, zucchini in a muffin? Sounds weird, right? But trust me on this one. You grate up a zucchini real fine, and you can’t even taste it, but it makes the muffins so moist. Mix that zucchini with your sourdough starter, flour, sugar, cocoa powder, eggs, and some chocolate chips. Bake ’em up and you got these rich, chocolatey muffins that are just melt-in-your-mouth good. They’re a good way to sneak some veggies into the kids, too. They won’t even know it’s there!
- Here’s some other things I do with sourdough:
- Sourdough Pancakes: Mix the starter with flour, eggs, milk, and a little sugar. Fry ’em up on a griddle and you got yourself a sourdough pancake breakfast. I like to slather ’em with butter and syrup, or sometimes I put fruit and whipped cream on top if I’m feeling fancy.
- Sourdough Waffles: Same idea as the pancakes, but you use a waffle iron instead. Makes ’em nice and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. My grandkids especially like these.
- Sourdough Cake: You can use your sourdough starter in almost any cake recipe. Just replace some of the liquid and flour with the starter. It makes the cake extra moist and gives it a little tang. I once made a sourdough chocolate cake and it was the best darn cake I ever ate.
- Sourdough Cookies: Yep, you can even make cookies with sourdough. Just add some starter to your favorite cookie dough recipe. It gives them a unique flavor and texture.
And don’t even get me started on what goes good on sourdough bread. Butter, of course. And cheese. Any kind of cheese you like. I love a good grilled cheese on sourdough. And avocado? Oh yeah, that’s the ticket. Sometimes I even fry up an egg and put it on top. Makes a good breakfast or lunch.
Now, I ain’t got no fancy baker’s schedule or nothin’. I just mix up the dough whenever I got the time. Sometimes in the afternoon, sometimes in the evenin’. And I let it rise however long it takes. Sometimes it’s a couple of hours, sometimes it’s overnight. It all depends on the weather and how warm my kitchen is. Bakin’ ain’t rocket science, you know. It’s all about feelin’ your way through it. And if it don’t turn out perfect, well, that’s alright too. It’ll probably still taste good.

So there you have it. My simple, down-home way of makin’ sourdough desserts. Nothin’ fancy, just good eatin’. Now go on and try it yourself. You might just surprise yourself with what you can make.
You won’t be sorry when you taste these sourdough goodies. They’re just the best darn things. And don’t be scared to experiment. That’s half the fun of baking. Just throw in whatever you like and see what happens. You might just come up with somethin’ amazing. And remember, even if it ain’t perfect, it’s still made with love, and that’s what really matters.
